Best €5 I've spent in a long while!

We moved to Ireland when we retired and we've been wanting to visit more of the Islands so this book came at exactly the right time. It's totally charming - written in a breezy style that reminds me of chatting with a neighbour over the back fence. Susan Byron obviously knows her stuff and has been to all the places she lists. I love the fact that she's completely honest about what she recommends and (even more importantly) doesn't recommend! We've made a list of where we want to go now (we're big history buffs so Boa and Holy Island come high on the list, and yes, the Skelligs, although we now know this might not be easy) as well as Lambay (who knew!). I think we'd better start saving now for that amazing place on Inishmaan - an anniversay treat, maybe. There's so much great information in here, and links to more - and all for the price of a latte.

I live in Ireland and, I must confess that left to my own devices, it would take years to get the information contained in Susan Byron's books. This latest addition highlights the sites on Ireland's Islands. The history of the islands dates back to the mesolithic sailors from Iberia who first settled there until today. This subject has never before been explored in a guide book in such depth. It's a very easy book to read and the tips and inside information are priceless to anyone who has a yearning to see the remnants of Ireland in your grandparents day. If you intend travelling to the West of Ireland or even if you are an 'armchair traveller' I highly recommend this book.

"Star Wars" and beyond...

Gairinish Island, Great Blasket...you folks probably haven't heard of these areas of Ireland (neither have I, and this will be my fourth time going to "The Emerald Isle" in May) Ah, "SKELLIG MICHAEL" might ring a bell. (especially for you "Star Wars" fans like myself). Many of these hidden areas are covered in this latest installment by Susan. I highly recommend this book, as I truly love this country and wish to go beyond my comfort zones and explore. So enjoy!! (a little secret: getting lost in these areas is half the fun)

Symbols highlight various places of interest: picturesque towns and villages, UNESCO world heritage sites, temples and shrines, special gardens, caves and hot springs, winter sport areas, etc. The map has a latitude / longitude grid at intervals of 1º and an index of localities. Multilingual map legend includes English. High quality German cartography.

Good info, appears to be current ..........

This appears to be a self published book , but not edited very well if at all. The pictures are black & white taken from various Flickr accounts and most of the info is from tripadvisor or the net. It is a good list and it is all in one place , but I almost get the feeling the author has never been to Seattle . Apologies if I'm off the mark . I'm just sayin is all.

Check the facts before you go. Needs some editing

This is a helpful list that gave me some ideas for my next trip to Seattle. But it needs a good editing. The grammar and spelling errors left me feeling a bit uneasy, and then I found a problem in one of the attraction entries. Pike Place is not the nearest public transit stop to Kubota Garden. It is almost 10 miles away! A quick trip to the King County Metro Trip Planner website confirms that there is a bus that goes almost right to the garden. And Kubota Garden is not listed in the table of contents, I found it first by browsing the book, then had to search to get back to it. I'll probably use this publication for ideas about places to go, but do my own research for the facts.

Great Map!

This map is outstanding! I almost could have gone without my guidebook with this map. It has all the Copenhagen highlights clearly marked (including Stroget, which most maps don't include), all the hotels (VERY helpful) clearly marked, all the train stations - inlcluding lines, etc. It's very easy to follow - it was a lifesaver for me! It was also nice that it was laminated, yet it wasn't plastic, so I could bend it to fit in my bag. I never thought I would be so impressed with a map!

The map is excellent for the portion of the city that it shows and is very easy to read with the multi colours. However, it does not show a large chunk of Copenhagen compared with the Freytag and Berndt map of Copenhagen. It's ok if you're just going to be downtown but does not show the outer core of the city.

Those voyages have taken Jean and his wife Jeannine around the world, including stops in Europe , South Africa, Argentina, and New Zealand. His experiences as a restaurateur, a hotelier, and a global traveler have given Jean Matocq a unique perspective on his adopted country, its ideals and its history.

What a journey

I have known Jean for over a decade. His story is a great, first hand account of some of "our" most important historical events. I you are an immigrant to the United States or product of an immigrant, like I am, you will enjoy the insights that Jean shares about what can happen in a land of opportunity. If one works hard, has a wonderful companion, and, maybe, is little bit stubborn, anything is possible! I highly recommend this book.

Good introduction to Laos and its culture. Learn where to go, what to see, where to eat, what to buy, etc. Like every other country, Laos obviously has its own peculiarities you should know before taking a trip. To help you make better decisions, the author provided a nice collection of pictures of activities, food, natural and manmade attractions, and other things you will likely want to visit and try when you go there. Food seems delicious, nature beautiful, people happy…., definitely worth learning about this country and going there. This guide is a good place to start.

I have never really been into reading travel guides, but this one was a really good one. Very well-written, interesting and informative. I had never thought about visiting Asia, but after reading this travel guide, I learned a lot about the area and about the cuisine. Even you are not the traveling type, this is book worth picking up just to learn a lot more about area and culture.

About the Author
Jennifer Moore was born in 1960 in Regina Saskatchewan. She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan dental school in 1990 and practiced dentistry for twenty-two years. Jen met her husband Ken when he came to Regina to play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders CFL football team. They married in August of 1987. Since retiring from dentistry, Jennifer runs their family owned vacation rental business with properties in Canmore, Alberta and Kona, Hawaii. Such a gem! The story of an ordinary family on an extraordinary adventure!

This book is a real treat! It takes you around the world and is full of humor, hard ship and personal exploration. Getting to know the Moore family and all of their idiosyncrasies is bound to keep you captivated and entertained. Jennifer does a fantastic job of portraying the stories through her point of view but also presenting a window into how all of the family members are coping. The Big Trip Revealed is an inspiring story that is sure to have you opening travel books in order to plan your own, unique adventure!

I ordered this book for my wife. She provided the following comments: Not being much of a traveller, I was surprised at how much I looked forward to my daily travels with the Moore family. The writer's gift of making the reader part of the family escapades really impressed me and her insightful comments after each chapter made it fun ....and inspiring. What a great opportunity to bond with and really get to know your chilldren! Hope we hear more in the future.

This book will having you laughing out loud at the adventures of a self professed "Princess" Mom and her budget obsessed "I only need 5 hours of sleep" husband, as they travel the world for one year with their 2 teenagers, mostly while living in a very small, very old, unreliable camper. To add to the stress, Ken is attempting to work almost full time, and both Ken and Jen decide to train for and run, their first marathon during the trip!

Mary Ashley Townsend was a novelist, newspaper columnist, and poet laureate of New Orleans who made several trips to Mexico with her daughter Cora during the last two decades of the 19th century. She collected her impressions of many aspects of life in that country—flora, fauna, architecture, people at work and play, fashion, society, food—and wrote about them during a time when few women engaged in solo travel, much less the pursuit of travel writing. Her collected work was still in progress when she died in a train accident in 1901, and was never published.

Renowned Latin Americanist Ralph Lee Woodward Jr. discovered Townsend’s manuscript, along with many of the author’s personal papers, in the Special Collections division of Tulane University’s Howard-Tilton Library. In addition to annotating the text, he has written a critical introduction to the work that provides excellent background information about the author and places the work in its historical and cultural context.Townsend’s writing provides an unusual feminine perspective on Mexico as she describes the country during the middle years of the Porfirio Diaz dictatorship, a pivotal time in Mexican history. Though Townsend does not delve heavily into politics her observations of people’s lives provide a valuable source for social historians of the period.Here and There in Mexico will make new contribution to the field of Latin American studies and to the travel literature genre, both as a primary source for historians and as a well-written account of a southern woman’s impressions of Mexico during a crucial period in that country’s development.

Mexico at the turn of the century.

What a find! Published after about 100 years of sitting in a college library, this fascinating sory of this women's travels in pre-revolution Mexico is full of humor, great descriptions of people and places,interesting tidbits of history,and a genuine love of Mexico and it's people. It was the era of the hacienda and pulque was the drink of choice. Mexico city had a population of 250,000 people! I only wish she had carried a camera with her! I really enjoy reading books written as well as this one. Interesting and informative. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in Mexico's complicated history or just interested in a good read.

Too high-level and sometimes wrong

Most topics that you'd like to know about retiring to the Philippines manage only a paragraph or two. Visas are completely glossed over (he doesn't even mention the different types), and incorrectly states that the amount of money necessary to be deposited in a Philippine bank is $50,000 ( incorrect. You can have $20,000 or less, depending on the type, your age, etc, but none of this is covered). I was also hoping for links to other online resources, such as for visas, but there are none. All in all, not very valuable.

A realistic and objective look at living in the Phillipines. Not very long but covers all the major topics quickly without getting bogged down in stories or minutia.
