will motivate you to pray and help you pray better through expositions of the prayers of the Pauline epistles

In this newly revised edition of" A Call to Spiritual Reformation: Praying with Paul," leading New Testament scholar D. A. Carson brings his technical expertise to a popular level by offering a short and readable book that addresses foundationally important questions on prayer through an examination of the prayers in the Pauline epistles. In this book Carson's pastoral heart and practical insight are on display in a way that might be surprising to some since he is perhaps primarily known as an academic. Rarely are practical, popular level books written by premier scholars and built on the foundation of robust exegesis and theology. This is the kind of gem we have on our hands with A Call to Spiritual Reformation.
Birthed out of a series of seven sermons preached in various settings, A Call to Spiritual Reformation aims “to mingle a little bit of practical advice on praying with prolonged meditations on some of Paul's prayers. Just as God's Word must reform our theology, our ethics, and our practices, so also must it reform our praying. The chief purpose of this book, then, is to think through some of Paul's prayers, so that we may align our prayer habits with his. We want to learn what to pray for, what arguments to use, what priorities we should adopt, what beliefs should shape our prayers, and much more” (xv). While most of the chapters address specific Pauline prayers, several address general principles: practical steps to grow in prayer such as setting aside time, eliminating distractions, and developing prayer lists (chapter 1); praying for others (chapter 5); excuses for not praying such as being too busy, feeling too spiritually dry, feeling no need to pray, and being content with mediocrity (chapter 7); and the simultaneous truthfulness of God's sovereignty and man's responsibility and how this impacts prayer (chapter 9). Throughout the meditations on Paul's prayers, Carson draws out both elements unique to the different prayers as well as elements that are consistently present in Paul's prayers.
I think that perhaps intellectual types are more likely to be drawn to this book – those more grounded on the Bible and more wary of seeking experience. Because Carson is a scholar and is known for his work in theology and biblical studies, his correctives to the tendencies of this camp are not only insightful but also more likely to be heeded. For example,
“Because some wings of the church have appealed to experience over revelation or have talked glibly about an ill-defined 'spirituality' that is fundamentally divorced from the gospel, some of us have overreacted and begun to view all mention of experience as suspicious at best, perverse at worst. This overreaction must cease. The Scriptures themselves demand that we allow more place for experience than that.”

Carson himself acknowledges that this book is only a small offering to helping Christians grow in prayer. He reminds the reader several times that this book only covers the prayers of Paul and has not treated the vast majority of the prayers in the Bible (e.g. the prayers of key biblical characters such as Moses, the myriad of prayers in the Psalms that cover the whole range of human experience and emotion, etc.). This book was not meant to be a how-to manual or a comprehensive theology of or guide to prayer. But as a series of brief meditations on the Pauline epistolary prayers, this little book is an excellent resource for anyone who desires to grow in prayer. Even for those who may be in a dry spell not desiring to pray, but wanting to want to pray, this is an excellent book. Carson doesn't just illuminate the “right” things to pray for so that our prayers stop sounding like the cartoon above, but he also provides heart motivations for why we should and why we need to cultivate deep prayer lives grounded in Scripture.

An Effective Guide to Growing in our Prayers!

I consider that if a book read leads one to develop a sermon series over it's content, then said book has had a significant impact. D. A. Carson (Research Professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School), through this updated edition, provided both an illuminating and challenging book to stimulate us all in prayer. Praying with Paul, considers Paul's major passages about his prayers for his readers and how what Paul prays for helps us with our prayers today.
None would argue that our weakness in much of evangelicalism is that we lack fervency and frequency in prayer. I can testify to my own struggles with this in my own life. And while there are many how-to-manuals on prayer, there is a lack of exegesis of Scripture of actual prayers and what they can teach us beyond the Lord's Prayer. Carson, in what were originally messages given, leads us to consider a number of issues in which we should be praying today.
Carson considers Paul's prayers as vital to be understood for our personal growth and the growth of the church today. He tackles such concepts of a framework of prayer from 2 Thessalonians 1:3-12, developing a passion for people in prayer from 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13, overcoming hurdles in Philippians 1:9-11, praying for power in Ephesians 3:14-21 and Romans 15:14-33. In each, Carson considers the text, rooted in its historical and grammatical contexts and shows how Paul's patterns in prayer can lead us to much more effective praying. He ends each section with some helpful questions for reflecting on the material, as well as a helpful example of his own prayer for spiritual renewal. A study guide, by The Gospel Coalition, is also available to help make reading the book even better.
As I said, if a book leads to significant change, then it is an effective book. Carson's volume has lead me to consider prayer being a more serious thing in my life and in the life of my church. On that note, based upon his own breakdown of a sermon-series on it (p. 208), I plan to lead a series in Paul's prayers in our church culminating in a week devoted to prayer. So, Carson has challenged me from Paul's prayers to be a more effective prayer. I pray that it would be true in my life and in yours. Take up and read and be both challenged and encouraged by Paul's prayers!

Learning to Pray Like Paul

Think of the epistles of Paul and what comes to mind? You may see Romans as a book with deep theological underpinnings or Galatians as a letter which focuses on law and grace. Maybe Ephesians is about the Armour of God and Colossians about Christology. Perhaps there are some of us who see Thessalonians as a warning about the end times and Timothy as instructions from an elder to a junior. What about using the Pauline Epistles as a way to pray? More specifically, what about letting the letters of Paul reform the way we pray? With this book, we learn to avoid the frenetic tendency of using the Bible to run programs, to plan preaching schedules, or to structure Bible study sessions using the letters of Paul. What about letting Paul inform us in terms of knowing God more personally and devotionally? What about letting Paul shape our own theology of prayer? Indeed, the most pressing need in the Church is more praying.
After setting forth eight lessons from the school of prayer, Research Professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School examines several Paul's letters to highlight some ways we can learn to pray. In 2 Thessalonians1:3-12, readers learn about the framework of prayer of thanksgiving in spite of trials and tribulations. Instead, persistence in prayer is linked to the promise that believers will be vindicated and those who persecute them will be judged. The goal of Paul's prayer is about glorifying God. The basis of prayer is via the grace of God. We learn how Paul prays for others. We sense Paul's deep passion for the people he wrote to.
In Colossians 1:9-14, Paul prays in a manner that challenges the hearers to know God deeper, to learn of what pleases God, and the four characteristics of Christian living.
That Christians will bear fruit in every good work
That they would grow in the knowledge of God
That they would demonstrate great endurance and perseverance
That they would joyfully give thanks to God.
In between chapters, Carson would insert some observations and tips of prayer. Some of the excuses he addressed are:
Too busy to pray
Too spiritually dry to pray
No felt need to pray
Too bitter to pray
Too ashamed to pray
Too unmotivated to pray
Too content with mediocrity to pray
In Ephesians 1:15-23, we learn about the power of prayer and how the central petitions of prayer eventually point to the love of God. In asking why we pursue power, we are forced to see it from God's perspective rather than man. For prayer in God's Name means learning to ask for things according to God's will and not the fancies of man. At the crux of Paul's prayer is that knowledge of God informs the way we pray. That is why we need a new Spiritual Reformation.
So What?
========
Indeed, this book is a gentle reminder once again that the Bible is not some book about moral instructions or philosophical treatise. Neither is it a book about what Christians can or cannot do. It is about spiritual relationship with God and in this book, about spiritual reformation through the prayers of Paul. Far too often, we approach Paul's epistle from the lens of theological frameworks. Seminary students and Bible study groups will be familiar with that. Far lesser is the use of the Pauline letters toward spiritual formation and spiritual reformation. This book enables us to do more of the latter. Hopefully, when we do more of that, we will learn to love the Bible even more and in the process to know God and to make God known.
While this book talks specifically about prayer, it is quite unlike books of prayer like Andrew Murray or EM Bounds. It is about incorporating prayer into Bible studies, prayer into Christian Living, prayer into exegesis, prayer into every aspect of our waking time. We may have stumbled upon the essence of Paul's conviction in his ministry and outreach to the Gentile: The letters are prayed into passions, passions into convictions, and convictions into knowing God.
Be warned. After reading this book, your approach to Paul's letters in the New Testament will be changed.
