RICHLY & SIMPLY PRESENTED
By Blaze
This book pulls together w/ clarity the facets of connecting & remaining connected to the Kingdom of God w/in each believer in Jesus Christ. It is THE book for those who know there is much more available in/through Christ than they are living. The Clarks have a gift for expressing exactly what many who have "head knowledge" of Scripture need. The substance in "The Supernatural Power of Peace" uncovers pure gold - which has been there all along! "How to"actually live in Peace is richly & simply presented.
I'm choosing to cooperate w/ the Prince of Peace & His ways.

The Grand Cañon of the Colorado:

John Muir was born in Scotland on April 21st, 1838. His Father wanted his children to have a stricter Religious upbringing and therefore moved the family to the United States. John Muir is perhaps known today as the most pre-eminent naturalist and advocate for the preservation of much of the western United States. Today being an environmentalist is laudable but in Muir’s days the country was there to be exploited but by hard work and lobbying Muir did much to turn such beautiful areas as Yosemite into protected National Parks. His writing is not only an invaluable guidebook to these unspoilt places but also a hymn to their spirituality. As a keen scientific mind he helped to push the understanding of nature forward by observing and writing upon the glaciers and their actions in eroding and shaping much of the land. Muir helped to also create The Sierra Club, which he led for many years, on projects to preserve these and other areas of outstanding natural beauty. He was equally adept at persuading politicians, from Presidents to local State officials, and the common man to come together in the defence of Nature.

A great description of the Grand Canyon
By Nick
There's no doubt that John Muir left his mark on the American landscape and as a naturalist, he's surpassed by none. I've been lucky to visit the Grand Canyon but I didn't *see* it like Muir did. As a traveler, Muir's view was unique - explain what you see and do to the point that it makes you want to get out and visit. Compared with some travelogs, Muir's seems more "matter of fact", but there's passion behind it. It's oddly hypnotic. It makes me wish I had the opportunity to explore the Grand Canyon with Muir, if time travel were possible.

The best part about the Kindle is getting a chance to explore classic literature. You can't beat the price with free books.

Good
By Bliggenstrauff
This was a good read, although short. It's amazing how he paints a picture with words. The oñly flaw iñ his writiñg is his aññoyiñg coñstañt misspelliñgs. It seems he ñever learñed how to spell "canyon", forever iñsistiñg that it's oñly a Spañish word despite it becomiñg añ Eñglish word with the curreñt spelliñg appareñtly betweeñ 1835-1845. With how mañy times he writes it it becomes aññoyiñg. He'll also hyphenate today ("to-day") and some other words that don't need hyphens here and there. Other words can be spelled wrongly, and he also puts two dots over the second e if there are 2 "e"s in a row, also completely unnecessary. So that's somewhat annoying to me but still forgivable as he describes nature so well.

Good reading from a great man
By Jimmy
Not as good as his writing on Yosemite, probably because Yosemite filled his heart! Still this is good reading from one of America's great environmentalists!

Ayşe, a 38-year-old mother from Istanbul, decides to tackle the Lycian Way in southern Turkey. She has never camped alone before. As she strikes out into Lycia’s ancient forests, she is on a quest to leave behind the past and find her own truth. But the Lycian Way is steeped in memories. Unknown to Ayşe, as she clambers over the precipices of the Mediterranean coast and through its lost cities, she is walking in someone else’s footsteps. 2500 years earlier, when Lycia was an independent state and worshipped the Goddess Leto, the Persian general Harpagos was stomping along the very same road in a bid to take over the ancient world.

Based on the true story of Ayşe Metin and the lost civilisation of ancient Lycia.

Talk about a new world view!
By Amazon Customer
I found this book extremely refreshing. Atulya's story line and voice kept me engaged, and the most novel concept was that my mind kept going back to the land. In the end, it wasn't the interplay between Ayse and her thoughts or Harpagoas and his trials that astounded me. It was that to me, the main character of this book was the earth. As speciesistic human beings we tend to write about things from our point of view and on our timeline. Atulya blew that timeline and point of view out of the water, explicating the lives of a modern day hiker and an ancient Persian General through the voice of the timeless rocks of the Lycian Way.

Enchanting Story
By PS 1973
Ayse's Trail is an engrossing story taking place in Turkey's Teke Peninsula, on the southwest 'Turquoise Coast', which is also ancient Lycia - known for its unusual ancient people. This novel follows the inner and outer journeys of two very different people at two very different times in history, both seeking relief from their pasts, as they traverse Lycia through its forested mountains and along the sea. Difficult obstacles are encountered along the way. Will they find strength to deal with these? Will they find new and hopeful futures? Or will they have futures at all?

The story is well crafted and as a person who has lived in this part of Turkey for many years, I am amazed at Ms. Bingham's ability to put into words what this land feels like to me, through her descriptions - its unforgivingness, but at the same time its tremendous beauty and enchantedness which seems to possess some people and bring them back here time after time. In a way, the land actually becomes the third main character - it is very much alive.

Great read
By Dianne Gungor
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the different elements to the book and the way it flowed naturally between past and present. Being very familiar with the area it was an absolute delight to discover this book. Having read countless books over the years of commuting, mostly of the travel writing or relocation nature, I can tell this author has what it takes. I will be keeping an eye out for her next book without a doubt. It will most definitely be re-read. I even made my brother-in-law buy his own copy!

100 Things To Do In Nashville Before You Die, by Abby White

Nashville has been called many things: “Music City,” the “Athens of the South,” or even “It City.” (Thanks for that last one, New York Times.) But many of us just call it home, and while we’re grateful that a bunch of travel and food magazines think we’re awesome, we still have a few tricks up our sleeves. Whether you reside in the 615 or just like to visit, there is a lot to eat, drink and experience here. Perhaps you were a karaoke star at Santa’s Pub way before Jimmy Buffet and Toby Keith filmed a music video there, but have you washed down a Donkey Leg with a Donkey Punch at Donks? Meat and three at Arnold’s is indisputably fantastic, but what about the Italian meat and three at Savarino’s? Everyone knows that you can get a superb cocktail at Patterson House or City House, but do you know which bar has the best Bushwacker? Maybe it’s been a while since you hit the honky tonks on Lower Broad, so you might want to know which one is the best one for dancing with a stranger, and which one is filled with frat boys. Whatever you’re looking for—hiking trails, arthouse theaters, record stores, shopping malls, hot chicken—this city has it, and this book will help you find it.

One of the most helpful, convicting, dignostic and Gospel-saturated books I've read this year
By Dave Jenkins
Thousands and millions of books are written every year, and every year I regularly read over one hundred books but very few of those books published and even fewer of those that I read are diagnostic books that punch you in the gut (in a good way to bring conviction of sin) by pointing out the weaknesses in pastoral culture and church life in order to help pastors see clearly their blind spots and point them to growth in the grace of God. Thankfully Dr. Paul Tripp a seasoned Pastor and counselor knows this which is why he wrote Dangerous Calling Confronting The Unique Challenges of Pastoral Ministry.

One of the more important trends I see happening in Christian publishing is an emphasize on Gospel centered growth in the grace of God. Added to this emphasis is a recent resurgence in books being published that emphasizes how the Pastor should be growing in the grace of God. Often such books on spiritual formation are written for the lay person so it encourages me when I see publishers like Christian Focus (who recently published Pastoring the Pastor) and now Crossway publishing Dangerous Calling addressing this issue in a way that doesn't burden Pastors but confronts them with the Truth of God's Word in order to help them see themselves as they are desperate needy sinners in need of Jesus and His grace.

There's an epidemic happening in pastoral ministry. In seminary future pastors are given a lot of information about theology, doctrine, church history and more to help equip them to preach, teach and minister to God's people. Sadly this emphasis on information focuses only on the head (knowing right doctrine is vital, so don't hear me arguing against that, my point is larger than this). My point is quite simply that Pastors are first Christians. The classical pastoral writers from the early church to the Reformation to the present have always focused on the character of the man which involves knowing right doctrine, but also being transformed by the doctrine we believe. In other words put more simply, sound doctrine leads to right living. What we believe has consequences so believing right doctrine should affect the way we live our lives before the throne of God's unending, everlasting grace.

Dr. Paul Tripp has personally experienced pastoral culture as a Pastor, as a pastoral counselor, seminary professor, and conference speaker. Having read most of Dr. Tripp's books one of the things I appreciate most about his style of writing is his goal to take Christians beneath the surface of our lives in order to point out indwelling sin and point out to the One in Jesus who longs for us to die to our sin, and turn from our sin to Him who can kill our sin and help us grow in the grace of God.

Paul Tripp's diagnosis is not only spot on about pastoral culture in Dangerous Calling but is confirmed by The Schaeffer Institute's [...] who did research on this issue. Their research pants a disturbing picture: 50 percent of the ministers starting out will not last 5 years. Over 1,700 pastors leave the ministry every month. 70 percent of pastors constantly fight depression. 80 percent of pastors believe that pastoral ministry has negatively affected their families.

Pastors read many books that fill their minds but not many that challenge them to take an honest assessment of where they are spiritually. Dangerous Calling was written to help diagnose your spiritual life and point you to the Lord Jesus. Dr. Tripp notes that with writing this book he has "launched myself on a ministry career direction to get help for pastors who have lost their way" (12), I applaud Dr. Tripp for this and pray the Lord blesses him and increases his tribe as he ministers to hurting Pastors.

At the heart of this book is the contention that "you are constantly talking to yourself about your identity, your spirituality, your functionality, your emotionality, your mentaility, your personality, your relationships, etc. You are constantly preaching to yourself some kind of gospel. You preach to yourself an anti-gospel of your own righteousness, power, and wisdom, or you preach to yourself the true gospel of deep spiritual need and sufficient grace. You preach to yourself an anti-gospel of aloneness and inability, or you preach to yourself the true gospel of the presence, provisions, and power of an ever-present Christ" (21). The main point that Tripp makes is that "no one celebrates the presence and grace of the Lord Jesus more than the person who has embraced his desperate and daily need of it" (23).

Now that you have some flavor of the direction the book the book takes let me share with you how this book ministered to me. I've written quite a bit in the past year about my own struggles with burnout in the past and how the Lord lead me through this season to grow in the grace of God. Since I've graduated from seminary this past May (May 2012) the Lord has by His grace increased my love not only for His Word (which I've been reading more regularly) but also for His people. Along with this desire for more of His Word and loving His people has come a desire to be more like Him. See what I just said there? The more we long for Jesus, the more we are in His Word the more we are going to long to be like Him. At the heart of the problem of pastoral burnout is the lack of wanting to be like Jesus. The reason why many seminary students struggle to grow in the grace of God is because they have become so focused on what they "know" that they miss the point and object of their faith--Jesus Christ and growing in His grace. As a seminary graduate I not only know this temptation myself, but have fell victim to it time and time again. Dr. Tripp also knows this temptation which is why he wrote Dangerous Calling.

Whether you are a seminary student, seasoned Pastor, Professor or whatever your station in life is, you need to read this book. Yes, this book was written to diagnose pastoral culture, but by extension, I believe this book addresses a rising epidemic that is occurring in the church. We have become a people focused on what we know about God but not about how He is transforming us. Again, I will note that I am not saying that what we know isn't important, as I've already stated that right doctrine is important but not ultimate. Knowing right doctrine ought to lead to right living. The reason this book was written was not to correct doctrine but to correct the false dichotomy between just living as if doctrine matters without being affected by it. It's the being affected by the doctrine we believe that Dr. Tripp is concerned about, and I agree with him. This is also why I believe that Dangerous Calling is a must read book for every Christian not just Pastors, because we all need to see ourselves as we are, in light of Jesus Christ and His perfect righteousness.

In conclusion (if its not already clear by the length of this review), this is a book I believe every Christian and Pastor must read. It's not often that I read a book that punches you in the gut (to lead you to repentance) and point you to the Lord Jesus Christ with balancing pastoral insight, biblical doctrine and practical application all in one book. Dangerous Calling is such a book which is why this book is hands down winning not only my favorite book of the year but is also the most convicting, encouraging and edifying book I've read all year. I highly recommend you get Dangerous Calling and as you read (as I did) I believe you will find the same as I did that Jesus will be at work in you (and through you) pointing out your sin and showing forth the beauty and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ through the writing of Dr. Tripp.

Every Pastor & Elder Board should read this
By William D. Curnutt
I want to thank Crossway Publishing and especially Angie Chetham for sending me an advance copy of Dr. Tripp's new book. This book has just been released.

This new book by Dr. Tripp is one that every Pastor should put in his library and one that they should make a point of reviewing (re-reading) at least every 18 months or so. The book is an encouragement to Pastors about how serious the calling to Pastoral ministry is. It is also a reminder that if we are not careful we will fall into some very bad habits and wrong thinking that will bring harm to the Kingdom and disrepute to the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

This book is also one that every Elder Board should take a look at. It will be helpful to remind them of the dangers of the Pastoral Calling and Ministry and what they can do as the church board to hold their Pastor's accountable as well as bring encouragement into their Pastor's lives.

The main concept that struck me most from this work was the idea that, "We do not teach well the word of God or serve the church well unless we are awestruck by the Power & Nature of our Lord and Savior." This was a central theme that was well developed, especially in Part two of the book. Most Pastors enter the Pastorate because at some point in time in their life they were "awestruck" by the power and majesty of the Lord. But as they continue to serve they often times find that the "awe" of the Lord starts to diminish. In place of that "Awe of God" they start to have an "awe of themselves!"

The book is divided into three sections.
· Section one examines the "Ministry Culture" that Pastors fine themselves in.
· Section two examines the "Danger of losing your Awe, i.e. forgetting who God is."
· Section three deals with forgetting who you (the pastor) are.

Dr. Tripp in section one deals quite a bit with reminding Pastors that they are taught in seminary that they should be a bit aloof from their congregation. They should live in isolation because of their calling. But he points out the dangers of this type of life style, how it has the tendency to cause the Pastor to feeling as though he is a bit above others, when in actuality we are the same when it comes to the chance of Satan hitting us with a bout of pride or arrogance. Now, he isn't saying that the Seminaries are teaching wrong things; he is just concerned that sometimes Pastors don't get a good picture of their need for accountability and how to be transparent and vulnerable with their congregation in ways that are building for them and the Kingdom.

I found myself in such agreement with the many things that Dr. Tripp wrote, and also found myself convicted of where my own attitudes and life style have fallen short, that I have ordered a case of these books to be delivered once they are printed so that I can share them with many Pastors whom I care about and feel will benefit from this book.

This book is not written for laypeople, it is written specifically for the clergy. BUT, if you are a layperson and you care about your pastor and the dangers that he faces on a regular basis you will also learn much from this well written text. Maybe you could also purchase the book as a gift for your pastor and give it to him along with a note of encouragement from you that you care about his life and ministry.

Challenging But Nothing New
By Luke-carl.
I know this is an immensely popular book that God has used and I do not want to be contrapuntal, but honestly I was underwhelmed; here is what I thought of the work, positive and negative, honestly and plainly so you can decide for yourself.

Positives:
The work is clearly written, the author is very honest and clearly a humble man--I really respect that. This is clear because he shares multiple humbling stories about himself, mimicking Paul who preferred to boast about his weaknesses. The subject matter is pertinent because the three main sections of the work are: Examining [critique of] Pastoral Culture; Forgetting Who God Is; Forgetting Who You Are. Also, it is as one other reviewer said "gut-wrenching" in that there are specific sins brought to light and examined (such as being controlling p. 160). Impressively, while deeply challenging, the work is neither negative nor angry, something difficult to accomplish. The work really does make you think about whether or not you have anger residing in your heart and whether or not you are consistent with what you preach, it is very convicting.

Negatives:
This work really is not for everyone. It is a sampling of Dr. Tripp's experiences with pastors who have lost their way in some regard and have, essentially, shipwrecked their faith as Paul would say. If you have not--if you have a relatively pure heart, good conscience, and sincere faith (1 Tim. 1:5) like Timothy did, then this work will be more of a warning with some smaller, specific parts of the work moving you to repentance. The work would probably never be thought of as original really since it is the application of current, popular (at lease in some circles) Tim Keller/John Piper Gospel Coalition principles of: Identity in Christ, Community, Preaching the Gospel to Believers, Accountability/Transparency, Passion, Awe of God, Servant-leadership. If these phrases are new to you or you simply appreciate being reminded of how they apply to particulars, you will love this work. If like me you are familiar (or overly-so) with the young, restless, reformed way of thinking, you will not find anything new.

In my estimation, Puritan works such as the Reformed Pastor or The Godly Home cover these same issues far better and with even greater precision and conviction.

"'As Duffy works his way through the papal roll of honour and dishonour, he is always careful to re-create the political, social and economic background to different reigns. He eschews opaque ecclesiastical jargon and, where a theological or doctrinal dispute has to be explained, he does so in a way that even those unversed in biblical concepts or Christian history will immediately grasp... An outstanding work of popular scholarship.' (Peter Stanford, Daily Telegraph) 'Duffy enlivens the long march through church history with anecdotes that bring the different pontiffs to life... Saints and Sinners is a remarkable achievement.' (Piers Paul Read, The Times) 'A distinguished text... offering plenty of historical facts and sobering, valuable judgements.' (John Adamson, Sunday Telegraph) 'Will fascinate anyone wishing to better understand the history of the Catholic Church and the forces that have shaped the role of the papacy.' (Gloria J. Great Book--Poor e-book Conversion

Duffy's timely and thought-provoking history of the papacy introduces the reader to the rise of the centralized papacy and the older collegial model of Church governance, revived by Pope John XXIII and now by Pope Francis. The author's work deserved five stars but he was poorly served by the publisher's careless conversion of the print version to a Kindle e-book. OCR errors are frequent; some truly absurd as when the bishop of Arles in southern France is consistently transposed into the zodiac as the bishop of Aries and the Ottonian Emperor's influence over the Church is transferred to the Ottoman Emperor. Such a fine book should have been proofread more carefully.

All have been both. Some more one than the other.
By Chris Serger
It has been said that the Church thinks in terms of centuries and that we may still be in its early days even though that Friday afternoon when the world turned on its Savior seems so long ago. In those 2000 years, 266 (sometimes very) flawed men have been pope. It's a lot to cover in 500 pages, but Eamon Duffy does so masterfully in his fourth edition of his history of the papacy, Saints and Sinners.

A book review, at minimum, should tell whether a book is worth reading. So often a reviewer spends time making common cause with or combatting the the author's arguments that no mention is made of whether the book is well written, well organized, enjoyable, and worth a share of a reader's limited time. Saints and Sinners is all of those.

While the author and this reviewer are Catholic, one need not be a Catholic to enjoy this book. An interest in Western history will suffice as there is certainly no single office which has had such a consistent role in its shaping for so long a time. And the papacy, as an office, and the men who have held it, is what this book is about. Church doctrine and general Church history are not its subjects unless directly affecting the office. One example: the Crusades are barely mentioned other than how only a strong papacy could have willed them into existence in a fractious Europe.

For 2000 years, the men to whom Jesus gave the keys to the kingdom, have striven to perpetuate his Church from age to age. From its earliest days they believed a unity was required - a unity rooted in a successor to Peter at the head of Christ's one Church. A cynic might see in this simply a desire for power. Power against deviants from orthodoxy. And temporal power while awaiting Christ's return. And there is no doubt truth in both of those assertions. But the mission of the Church, from the time of Pentecost, has been to ensure people's eternal souls ultimately end up where they belong: in heaven with their Creator. What may appear as a lust for power can also reasonably be seen as fallen men doing as they see fit to create the most visible, straight path back to Heaven. To the 266 popes, that path is through the Catholic Church.

That is not to say there have not been some reprehensible men elected Pontiff. And a whitewash this is not. Constantine's Edict of Milan, legalizing Christianity in the Roman Empire, was a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that it opened the gates to the Church and is no doubt one of the key reasons that Christianity became the dominant faith of Europe. A curse in that it began the intertwining of the Church and politics. And where politics are involved, corruption, greed, and every other vice are not far behind. While the days of European monarchs wielding great authority in papal elections was long over, some still had a veto authority as late as the 1910s. Of course, it cuts both ways: for centuries the popes were kingmakers in whichever European kingdoms were currently under its sway. This unfortunate, and probably inevitable, commingling gave rise to the worst periods of the papacy culminating in the some of history's more notorious characters such as the Alexander VI.

The wave of 19th century political upheaval, and Napoleon specifically, were death knells to the Church's temporal power. And all for the good. Though popes like Leo XIII (1878-1903) and his immediate successors fought it, the breaking of the papal influence on temporal power (including the loss of the Papal States) was the greatest thing to ever happen to the Church. It paved the way for popes exclusively dedicated to its mission without having to operate within the confines of conflicting agreements with different countries, some of which could exert inordinate amounts of influence on the Church's leadership, ability to evangelize, and revenue collection. I do not think it's going to0 far to say that without Napoleon it would be hard to imagine St. John Paul the Great, Benedict XVI, and Francis I becoming pope. The qualifications for election would still have been too concerned with temporal matters when these men were the right age.

2000 years. 266 saints and sinners. All have been both. Some more one than the other. But David had Uriah killed so he could take his wife, Bathsheba. And still he wrote the Psalms. Peter denied even knowing Jesus three times in a span of hours after having walked on water with him. And still he was crucified in Rome after having established his Lord's Church there. God works through men; that is to say sinners. And He does so in the hope that we shall all stumble home and be saints with him in Paradise. However circuitous the route.

The Global Gospel: Achieving Missional Impact in Our Multicultural World, by Werner Mischke

The Global Gospel describes how the honor/shame dynamics common to the Bible and many Majority World societies can be used to contextualize the gospel of Christ so it will be more widely received. The Global Gospel impacts many of the basics -- how we read the Bible, how we preach the gospel, how we understand our mission, how we train leaders, how we collaborate in the global church. The Global Gospel will stretch your understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ by uncovering a major blind spot in Western theology, namely, honor and shame. You'll be led on a journey beyond a legal framework of the gospel -- to one that is "legal plus regal." How you communicate the gospel and live out the gospel -- locally and globally -- may well be transformed. The Global Gospel is a call for theological dialog and missional creativity rooted in the ancient paths of Scripture and the relational honor of our King. You and your team will be challenged to reconfigure what you do and expand what you believe is possible in our Lord's Great Commission.

There's More to the Bible than we See!
By Robby Butler
The Global Gospel: Achieving Missional Impact in Our Multicultural World has to represent one of the most significant advances in mission understanding I have encountered in 35 years of research.

I am delighted to see it catching on through
- the Jan/Feb 2015 issue of Mission Frontiers magazine,
- four Missio Nexus webinars scheduled for February 2015, and
- major forthcoming articles in International Orality Journal and Evangelical Missions Quarterly.

But HOW have we overlooked for centuries the fact that "our Bible" was written in cultural values foreign to our own?
And HOW have we assumed that our presentation of the Gospel for Western societies is the best presentation for all cultures?
And HOW should this new awareness affect global evangelism, discipleship and community formation?

This book provides an in-depth look at honor-shame dynamics in the Bible itself, as well as addressing these other pressing questions.
The Global Gospel: Achieving Missional Impact in Our Multicultural World will take you deep into the heart of the Bible and the Gospel, and prove an important reference work for decades to come.

--- My own summary of Werner's thesis:

We all come to scripture with lenses shaped by our culture and our mentors.
Over the centuries, *individualistic* Western culture has formed a deeply entrenched *legal* view of the gospel, reflected in
- *Four Spiritual Laws*,
- the *Romans Road*,
- The Way of the Master, etc.
Each of these aims to awaken awareness of personal guilt, then introduce God's plan for restoring our innocence.

These reflect a true and effective understanding of the gospel, *however* the Bible was written in and to cultures where *honor*, *community* and *purity* were deeper concerns than *innocence*--and this is still is true in most of today's world.

While the gospel does resolve our *guilt*, it just as effectively addresses *shame*, *estrangement* and *defilement*--issues of much deeper concern than guilt among most of today's unreached peoples.

Since these elements of the gospel are not of primary concern to Westerners, we tend to read our Bibles *without* seeing the *honor/shame* themes in almost every Bible story, and to pass on our lenses even in cultures with honor/shame dynamics.

Thus evangelism often defaults to teaching everyone to understand their *guilt* rather than *starting with how the gospel addresses the local culture's deepest concerns.*

--- Proof in the pudding

Werner doesn't just make an abstract claim that we have missed much of what the Bible has to teach us.

He demonstrates clearly and compellingly that understanding honor and shame in the Bible is essential to
- unlocking many of the Bible's riches, and
- removing the glass ceiling a Westernized gospel can have in non-Western cultures.

Werner provides separate chapters detailing with ten honor-shame dynamics present on every page of the Bible, and parallel chapters discussing how a gospel presentation can be adapted to harmonize or resonate with that concern in other cultures.

In The Global Gospel: Achieving Missional Impact in Our Multicultural World you will learn about the Biblical and global significance of:
- Honor-status reversal: with Jesus himself as the prime example
- The love of honor (Biblically not just a bad thing)
- Two sources of Biblical honor: ascribed and achieved
- Image of limited good (the false idea--challenged by the Bible--that your gain means my loss)
- Challenge and Riposte: the pattern through which Jesus challenged the ascribed honor of the religious leaders
- "Face": how humanity lost honor in the Fall, and how God is restoring it
- Body language (How the Bible relates this to honor and shame)
- Patronage: (how Biblical values may run counter to Western assumptions)
- Name/Kinship/Blood: the Biblical significance of our background and relationships
- Purity (and the Bible's solution for the universal defilement of mankind)

---

The Global Gospel: Achieving Missional Impact in Our Multicultural World presents two exciting possibilities:
- *Our Bible reading can be greatly enriched* to expand our understanding of God's love for us.
- *Our global outreach can be greatly empowered* as we shift
- from trying to teach everyone to think about guilt like Westerners,
- to letting the gospel connect with everyone in their own greatest concern.

The Global Gospel: Achieving Missional Impact in Our Multicultural World is a must read for every Christian interested in understanding the fullness of what Christ has done for us.
It is also important reading for every cross-cultural worker.

For those working cross-culturally, two valuable (briefer) introductions to this topic are
- Roland Muller's The Messenger, the Message and the Community, and
- Jayson Georges' The The 3D Gospel: Ministry in Guilt, Shame, and Fear Cultures

Every Pastor Should Read This Book
By Nick Peters
Mission One has released this book by Mischke to illustrate the problem in reaching people in the Majority World. We have been hampered growing up in a guilt-innocence culture whereas the world of the Bible is that of an honor-shame culture. It also has impacted our reading of the Bible as where there are parts that are not made explicit, because these would be part of the background culture, we automatically tend to plug in our own culture.

Consider marriage. In the ancient world, a marriage would often be a matter between two men. No. Not the way you're thinking in our debates today. It would be a matter between the father of the groom and the father of the bride. The two would arrange it and it would be a sort of trade. Marriage would be used to unite families and often could be used for political alliances as well. If we read in our concept of dating and marriage, we misread the text.

Mischke has a great line that I wish we all could learn in the west to show this.

Culturally speaking, the Bible does not "belong" to you; it's not your book.

What a great lesson to learn. While we can agree with Paul that everything was written for us, it was not written to us. We of necessity need Scripture to understand the salvation of Christ and what it is we are to do, but we do not have to have Western culture being assumed as part of Christianity. This is not to say that Western culture is a bad thing, but it is to say that it does not need to be married to the Gospel. Too often in our evangelism strategy, we've brought over not just the Gospel to unreached people, but we've also brought over our own culture and included it in the Gospel.

If you go to people of an honor-shame culture and start talking about the guilt that is experienced because of our sin and the beauty of justification by faith, you will not get much of a response to your altar call. These people are not thinking primarily about guilt. What matters most to them is honor and shame. In fact, maintaining honor means more to them than life itself does. This is why Japanese pilots could crash on Pearl Harbor as an attack and why some terrorists can do suicide bombers. They value the honor of what they fight for and the honor they can gain more than their own lives.

Now imagine going to these people instead and telling them about how they are living in a state of shame. They have dishonored the one true God and will be having to face His eternal shame. However, this God has provided a remedy. His Son has come and faced the shame that we all deserve by dying a most shameful death on a cross at the hands of His enemies. However, in facing this, God honored Him by raising Him from the dead and seating Him at His right hand to rule the world. All who trust in Him, He will bestow His honor on and adopt them into the family of God.

Okay. Now you're talking. If you're speaking of honor and shame to these people, they will be listening. While you should believe in justification by faith, that is not the message that will reach these people because that is a message about guilt. Of course in honor-shame cultures there is guilt in the sense of having done an objective wrong to someone, but the result is not an internal feeling that we must make amends and fix the problem. The main sense for the honor-shame is that the person has been a disgrace and has dishonored their family and their culture. In fact, this is one reason suicide can be so prevalent in an honor-shame culture like Japan. It is better to die than to live with shame.

Mischke takes us through several aspects of an honor-shame culture. Why is the face so important? What is challenge-riposte? What is a patron and how does he relate to his clients? Why is purity such a big deal? These and many other questions are asked. Mischke also wants to stress an important point that this not only applies to how we reach people in the majority world, and yes, most of the world does think in terms of honor and shame, but how we reach our own people over here.

How many of us have had guilt for a past sin that we've done and while we know forgiveness, we still have a lot of shame over it? It is just painful to look back and think on it every time. Many of us to some extent carry shame. I am convinced none of us can live fully in an individualistic culture. There is always still going to be this background culture of honor and shame no matter how much we try to bury it.

How would your presentation of the Gospel be different if you not only removed the objective guilt someone has before the throne of God, but you also shared with them that God has taken away their shame. What if you showed them that God has honored them? What if you showed them that honor is something they are even commanded to seek for in Scripture? What if you showed them they really are adopted into the family of God?

For this, Mischke's book will also give a greater appreciation of the work of Christ. Removing guilt is good and important and we should never lose sight of that, but the idea of honor is essential. So much we have songs in our contemporary culture that speak of God as if He is our buddy and our best friend. What if you instead got the message that you are seated in the heavens as Ephesians 2 says? What if you were told you were adopted into the family of God, as can be found at the end of Romans 8? I can't help but think of C.S. Lewis who said we are far too easily pleased. We want to be a friend of God. He wants us seated in the heavens.

Now I do not agree with everything Mischke says. For instance, with challenge-riposte, I think Mischke does go against it some. I think Jesus in fact engaged heavily in it and the resurrection, as Mischke rightly shows, is certainly the ultimate riposte. The early church did the same as did the apostles and where the honor of God is challenged today, we also need often to engage in challenge-riposte as well.

Still, this is the kind of book I wish every pastor would read. It is an excellent introduction to this kind of thinking for those who might not be familiar with it at all. If we could reclaim this, we would not only have much more vibrant Christian lives, but we would also be able to understand the Bible and the historical Jesus far better than we do. In fact, while some have said there could be a fourth quest for the historical Jesus starting with taking the Gospel of John more seriously, I believe the next real quest for the historical Jesus will involve learning to understand Jesus from a majority world perspective.

In Christ,
Nick Peters

Informative and helpful
By Sandy
Good book. Little cumbersome and repetitive in the later chapters. Good descriptions of the symptoms of shame expressed in a culture but a little lacking in the explanation and cause of shame. Seems to put cultures is one box or the other when there is more overlap of sin/guilt and shame in all cultures. I urge caution as many authors think our recent "enlightenment" will produce the key to rapid advancement and forget there is nothing new under the sun. Otherwise, a very good study, obviously well researched and insightful.
