Girding for battle, an excellent addition to the arsenal

Still on my first read, but it's definitely an excellent book. The size makes it a good fit for a jacket pocket, and the binding is very durable. Although you cannot tell from the rather poor image, the corners are rounded, not square, and the cover details are embossed, not printed. The page edges are silvered, and there is one ribbon -- I could wish for more. The paper quality is excellent, a very white and sturdy stock.

The first six chapters are the manual, as such, and the remainder contain the tools and weapons (prayers) with which to conduct the battles.For those who doubt the existence of the devil and of demons, this book may not hold much interest. For the rest of us, it will be a welcome companion, a reliable tool in our daily lives.

We have such a wealth of prayers from the saints that it must have been a considerable challenge selecting those which are included. I could wish there were an index, as roughly 270 pages are filled with prayers, and quickly finding any one in particular is a challenge.

Overall, I am very pleased with this book, and besides my own copy, have ordered more, as gifts for others.

I loved every aspect of this balanced and well-written manual for spiritual warfare

As the introduction spells out:

"Sacred Scripture speaks of our ongoing battles with the world, the flesh, and the Devil (see Jas 4:1–7). This book focuses on our struggle with the last of those three adversaries …"

He gives his reasons for concentrating on this aspect based on disbelief in Satan’s existence, lack of knowledge regarding resources available, and that even our struggles with the flesh and the world can be influenced by the Devil’s interference. This is a book of considerable balance and prudence. There are plenty of caveats for a book of this type and Paul Thigpen takes care to make all the proper distinctions. One of the important distinction is regarding aspects that are reserved for the priestly role and what the laity is able to do. These distinctions are reinforced throughout the book. This manual avoids the Saturday Night Live’s Church Lady cry of “Could it be SATAN?” while specifying the reality of spiritual warfare and demonic influence.

The first part of the book is a primer on the scriptural and theological aspects of spiritual warfare. The reality and urgency of what are response should be is spelled out as we really do have a mortal enemy who wants to seek our destruction. While we are alive there can never be a ceasefire regarding spiritual warfare and spiritual pacifism is just surrender of our soul. I really enjoyed this whole section of the book as it lays out the theology reinforced with a solid bedrock of scriptural references.

The second part of the book broken up into multiple sections providing the tools and the weapons for spiritual warfare.

+ Church teaching about spiritual warfare from Catechisms, Councils, and Papal documents.
+ Biblical reference that provides a glossary, biblical history involving the Devil and Demons, and related scriptural verses.
+ Wisdom from the saints on spiritual warfare. Like his saint’s meditation book I totally loved this section for the wide range of pertinent quotes. This is a part of the book I will want to revisit from time to time.
+ The last section includes specific prayers, devotions, and hymns related to spiritual warfare. This section is about a third of the book and is a great resource for prayer. Included in this are Rosary meditations for each mystery along with some very nicely written prayers from the author.

So this is surely all you need to be interested in this book. Yet there is one more aspect that makes this book even better. That this manual was published like an “old school” prayerbook meant to be kept at hand and well used. It is described as “Premium Ultrasoft with two-tone sewn binding, ribbon marker and gold edges.” This is just beautifully made. I am pretty much converted over to only using ebooks and I did read this as a PDF, but I was totally delighted when I received this book in the mail.

DO NOT PASS OVER THIS BOOK! No really.

Repeat: do not overlook this book. I recently purchased a copy at a local catholic men's conference in my town from a vendor there. I have been devouring the book ever since. First and foremost, the contents of this book are wonderful. It covers everything from outlining demonic activity, to relevant scripture passages, to quotes from the great saints, to prayers, etc. etc. While I've been a (happy) catholic my whole life and have never doubted demonic activity, this book as opened my eyes to the tactics of the devil in a profound way (particularly via the quotes from the saints). There are MANY quotes, prayers, and anecdotes from many saints (including many heavy hitters like Saint Francis deSales, Teresa of Avila, John Vianney, Aquinas, Louis de Montfort, Ignatius, and the list goes on and on). In my mind, this is where much of the gold of this book lies. These are the holy men and women of legend, some of whom are doctors of the church. It does us well to heed their divinely inspired wisdom. Put simply, this book is very worth reading since it could help you save your soul.

Also worth noting is the fact that this book is very very well made. It has a leather cover, silver page edges, a ribbon to keep your place (or favorite page) and is printed in two colors (black for text and red for headers and citations). The embossed cover is quite lovely and well done. This is a book I will be keeping for a very, very long time. I suspect this will be a reference guide and coach the remainder of my life.

Great for planning ahead! There is so much to see outside of Reykjavik and expensive tourist stuff!

This is perfect for anyone who intends to visit and discover the island on their own at any point. This was purchased ahead of time so that we could plan out our driving and sight-seeing before traveling in hopes to get the most out of renting a vehicle there. Gas stations and major site-seeing places are marked (great for researching places unheard of ahead of time!). I'm not an avid hiker, but to me trails, camp sites, elevation is seems pretty handy for those who are. The best part about this map so far is that we can make permanent marks on it of all the places we want to visit with a sharpie and it stays even when exposed to water, but like whiteboards it can be erased using a dry-erase marker. Iceland can have very unpredictable weather and many blogs recommended water resistant items. Being laminated, I have no doubt this will hold up! I'll be sure to update if it fails!

About the Author

Gillian Gloyer first attempted – wholly unsuccessfully – to visit Albania in 1981. She finally made it in 1998 and spent most of the next four years living and working there. She travelled the length and breadth of the country for both business and pleasure; she continues to visit the country regularly and retains good contacts there. She speaks the language well and translated the extracts from Albanian authors which feature in the guidebook. She is a keen hill walker and amateur archaeologist.

Great guide book

It was one of the few guide books in Albania. I just returned from this fascinating and beautiful country. The book was very helpful about important cities and things to see. One of the things in the book most helpful to me is it gave me a list of many tour companies that could put a took together private tours. I got quotes from several company and used one of the companies listed in the book Elite Travel. They did an outstanding job. That so much for taking the guess work out of traveling!

Best Albanian Tour Guide Book

Great book. I had the 3rd edition when I went 8 years ago. After reading felt well equipped. Many young natives commented that I know more about Albania and the places to see, and rivers, and history than they did. Looking forward to seeing and doing more, this time with a group of friends and family. I am sure I will feel well equpped with this updated book. I know it has more maps and details than the previous edition.

An excellent help for those with addictions, with some caveats

The other reviews I've seen on here seem to gravitate toward 5 stars or 1 star, with few in-between (in fact, I am the first to offer a 4-star review.) The reason is primarily the theologically controversial content. As a conservative-minded evangelical, I knew I was in for a journey the moment I saw a Rob Bell endorsement in the front of the book. A lot of people seem shocked at the more liberal bent of Taylor's theology, but he is not in any sense deceptive about it - he wears it right on his sleeve. I'm not sure what these readers were expecting.

I think it is important to evaluate a work according to its author's purposes, not the reader's. (In fact, as a conservative I would say this is an essential perspective to have!) I came to this work not for theology, but to consider personal testimony of finding healing from porn addiction. On this, the book delivers in spades. Taylor delves into pain and our self-medication of it. He goes deep into talking about who we are as human beings before he even jumps into talking about pornography, which is a huge plus. Too often addiction is treated as a problem that can be solved by tackling it head-on, rather than by understanding who we are as whole people.

Taylor understands the human experience thoroughly; his skills in psychology exceed his skills in theology. He understands pain and the human response to it better than maybe any other person I've read. It was a strange feeling as I read each page and learned new things about myself despite finding little things to disagree with all over the place. I truly think anyone reading this book with an open mind will learn a lot about themselves, regardless of religious persuasion.

One of Taylor's greatest strengths is his consideration of belief. He is sharply critical of the power of belief to actually change behavior, preferring experience. (I am making his point simpler for the sake of brevity; it is a bit more complicated than that.) While I disagree that experience can be a valid test for truth, he is right to be critical of evangelicalism's tendency to emphasize intellectual agreement over personal transformation. Something is not truly believed unless it is experienced. This accords with the biblical portrait of salvation and deliverance from sin, which emphasizes not just confession of the gospel but also tasting and seeing that the Lord is good. True healing from addiction is not in a statement of faith, but in a life lived free.

Of course, the theological content of the book is its greatest weakness. I would think it irresponsible to praise the book's great strengths without giving the appropriate caveats. Much of Taylor's recommendations and explanations flow from skepticism regarding the authority of Scripture. One example that is close to the heart of the book: he is strongly opposed to using the metaphor of "fighting" sin, preferring instead to describe this as a "pilgrimage." Both metaphors, however, are scriptural (consider Isaiah 30:21 for the pilgrimage metaphor, 1 Timothy 6:12 for the fighting metaphor.) Taylor is probably - and quite understandably - reacting to an unbiblical extreme of the "fighting" metaphor which is very common among men in evangelical circles. The existence of that extreme, however, does not warrant outright rejection of the metaphor entirely. Taylor is all about people finding their own paths to healing, but I think he is inconsistent in this when he looks down on one particular metaphor that has, in fact, helped many people find healing (some of whom I personally know.)

Taylor is also very weak in his doctrine of sin, which leaves the book feeling incomplete. While porn addiction is certainly a way that we medicate pain, this is not mutually exclusive with the idea that it is a transgression of Christ's law of love. Any complete Christian view of addiction has to include this dimension. The use of porn affects not just the user. The actors are degraded, whom are made in the image of God. One's future or current spouse is dishonored. The porn industry continues to expand, thus attracting other people who may themselves be addicted and have their lives ruined. The person who uses porn must come to grips with the fact that they have failed to love God and others by their sin. Taylor's view of sin is simply too individualistic, focusing almost exclusively on what sin does to the offender, as opposed to the offended. Of course, this is just one book, and a fairly short one. I am more than willing to stand corrected if he puts out another book that addresses the social dimension of porn!

While I take the same issue with the book as many of the 1-star reviewers do, I don't see why it's necessary to throw the baby out with the bathwater. People affected by addiction, pornography in particular, will be moved and helped along their pilgrimage (or their fight!) by this book. Just read with discernment, as you should any book.

Not Recommended

Let me open this by saying that I am a Counseling & Care Pastor at a fairly large church. I read this book because one of the areas I provide care is on an evening every week, where our church provides nearly 20 different types of support, recovery, and discipleship groups on a variety of issues - including sexual integrity, sexual trauma, and past wounds / pain.

I was evaluating this book to use for our sexual integrity group, because it came highly recommended by XXX Church - entity I greatly respect.

I cannot recommend enough that you *avoid* this book, unfortunately. Without going into an unnecessary breath of detail, it is full of eisegesis (subjective, personal interpretation) of Scripture (blatant misrepresentations of what the Kingdom of God is), aspects of universalism, an outright disregard for sin as the underlying issue in favor of lower levels of Maslow's self-actualization hierarchy (veiled humanism), the author's discrediting of the concept of original sin, and an outright statement by the author(s) that there are more ways to salvation and "self-actualization" than the Person and work of Jesus.

I gave it two stars because there are moments of great thought in here. The final two chapters have some decent theology, and I very much appreciate how well the author(s) highlight the whole person (including feelings). All that is top notch.

Unfortunately - the inexcusable misuse and neglect of Scripture and God's Truth is so overwhelming in the first 5 chapters that it almost entirely discredits what good there is. This really bummed me out because I had high hopes...but ultimately this book is not for the Christian struggling with addiction or sexual sin. It's not even for the non-Christian because the Gospel is unrecognizable.

If anyone needs a solid recommendation for a book, try "Sexual Sanity for Men / Women" by David White. It is the best book I have found on this issue, at this present time.

Approach this book with caution!

Approach this book with caution. Although it may bring some initial positive experiences, it is not what it portrays to be. This is not a Biblical approach to redemption. There are no scripture references in the book. Before you say "so what", consider this. The God that created you wants to have a relationship with you. In order to make this possible he provided his word for us so that we could get to know him. He even sent his son to die for us. If someone is trying to find God, it only makes sense that he would start with the word of God. Finally, the experiences mentioned in the text could be interpreted many different ways, some rather scary! I suggest checking out "Healing the Wounds of Sexual Addiction" by Mark Laaser instead. He has a much more balanced and effective approach.

Helpful Resource for Pastors

The Practical Shepherding Series from Brian Croft continues to be a helpful resource for pastors. In one of his latest releases Brian writes with one of his pastors at Auburndale Baptist Church, Jason Adkins. In this volume, Gather God’s People: Understand, Plan, and Lead Worship in Your Local Church, Croft and Adkins offer a practical content to ensure that worship gatherings glorify God and bless God’s people. As a result, the book focuses on helping ministers to focus the worship services upon the Scripture.

The book is divided up into 3 sections. Part 1 focuses on the what the Bible says about worship, part 2 provides instruction on how to plan worship services, and part 3 talks about how pastors can put into practice what they have discussed in parts 1 and 2.

One aspect of this book that I greatly appreciated was how the authors emphasize that planning worship is a pastoral function and that the pastor is a worship leader. Too often we think of the worship leader as the person who leads music. While music is a component of worship it is not all; there is far more worship than music in our Sunday gatherings. The preaching, praying, reading of Scripture, and observances of the ordinances are all leading in worship. Even this little tweak can be revolutionary for pastors and congregations.

One of the strengths of this series by Croft is its accessibility. Practical Shepherding is short and immensely helpful. With this, the books do not cover everything that one might have questions on. There are other books that may provide more thorough treatment on the topics (on the topic of worship consider: Chappel or Kauflin or Cosper). Someone might also read this book and find that their model is a bit different than the context that Croft and Adkins write from. While some may find this to be a demerit of the book, I think this can be helpful for pastors and church leaders. There are some basic truths and convictions that undergird the ministry expressions of faithful churches in different contexts. If a church does not sing hymns or Psalms they can still find help here by the emphasis upon doctrinally rich, Christ-centered songs that drive minds and hearts back to the Scripture.

A short but excellent new book on biblical worship!

I once heard Jim Hamilton of Southern Seminary say that our conceptions of worship in heaven are sometimes distractions: “Without God and the Lamb, heaven is nothing more than a gold-plated hell.” Yes and amen. His point is that Christians often think more about what is in heaven rather than who is in heaven. The same thing happens when present-day churches gather as well. Churches are sometimes hampered in their worship by petty arguments about styles, colors, choirs, and the like, all the while losing sight of the object of their worship—the Lord Jesus Christ. Churches sorely need to refocus their services around the central object of their worship.

In a new book, Gather God’s People: Understand, Plan, and Lead Worship in Your Local Church, Brian Croft and Jason Adkins offer a way forward—a way in which worship services can be biblical, engaging, and Christ-centered. God cares about how he is worshiped, and not everyone worships rightly. Thus, Croft and Adkins write to help pastors organize worship services that limit distractions and fail to focus on what Scripture prescribes: the greatness of God, the sinful plight of humanity, and our need for Christ.

Conducting Corporate Worship

Gather God’s People aims to “aid you in your biblical understanding of corporate worship, in how to best plan for it, and in how to effectively and faithfully conduct it so that God alone is passionately praised by his redeemed people” (15). The authors divide the book into three sections. In Part 1, they give us a theological understanding of biblical worship (19–56). Part 2 primes us on planning worship services—in particular, reading, praying, and singing the Word of God as the primary elements of corporate worship (57–84). Part 3 discusses leading worship services from the standpoint of the church’s elders (85–119). In other words, if Part 2 is about the elements that should be present, Part 3 is the “how-to” for leaders to implement them each Sunday.

The book has four appendices, two of which focus on psalm singing (though not exclusively) and how the psalms are essential for implementing biblical worship (120–31). Croft (senior pastor of Auburndale Baptist Church in Louisville) and Adkins (associate pastor at Auburndale Baptist) also provide a few examples of psalm texts set to familiar tunes (found primarily in the Trinity Psalter) along with hymn sheets of newer songs that can be sung with older melodies. They conclude with a hymn sheet for singing their church covenant, a practice they encourage.

Preparing for Sunday

Croft and Adkins believe God cares deeply about how he is worshiped, not simply that he is worshiped. This reassuring emphasis sets the content of Gather God’s People within the theological trajectory of the Bible. Further, Croft and Adkins adhere to the regulative principle (26). As a result, they emphasize leading services according to Scripture’s prescribed teaching on worship.

Croft and Adkins approach this issue as pastors working together to plan and execute services. Indeed, they encourage the use of more than one planner for worship services (30). While working directly with the preaching pastor may be foreign to many contemporary worship leaders, Croft and Adkins encourage it: “We commend coherence with the content of the sermon as a high priority for worship planning” (73). Such coherence can only be accomplished when the preacher works in tandem with the planner. This pastoral concern is warranted, especially since the tendency may be to deemphasize coherence and to think pastors and worship leaders do two entirely different tasks. Yet songs, prayers, sermons, and Scripture readings do not happen in isolation. Taken together, these elements communicate the truth of the gospel. They “preach” in a way similiar to how the sacraments proclaim the Lord’s death and resurrection (1 Cor. 11:26).

Worship leaders should think pastorally about their task because they teach the congregation, whether they realize it or not. And their task is a sobering one: they are putting words in the mouths of the church, teaching her to say and sing specific phrases, and to consider and grasp theological truths. Our services, then, should be scriptural from start to finish. In other words, “The whole service should prepare believers to hear, accept, believe, love, submit to, and obey the Scriptures” (74).

Gather God’s People also rightly highlights the role of the psalms and biblical spirituality. The psalms convey exuberance, exasperation, confession, and confidence (48–49). Should not our contemporary worship services reflect the same? Unfortunately, singing the psalms is sorely missing in many churches today. As John Calvin once noted, “When we sing them, we are certain that God puts in our mouths these, as if he himself were singing in us to exalt his glory.” Croft and Adkins echo Calvin’s wise exhortation.

Minor Misgivings

Nevertheless, Gather God’s People has shortcomings. One cannot expect to agree with every jot and tittle of any book, let alone a practical guidebook. First, Croft and Adkins limit the treatment of theology and practice to 140 pages. As part of the Practical Shepherding series, the volume leaves the writer wanting more, because it is geared for instruction in practice more than theology. Thus, I would suggest also reading a more robust theological work from seasoned scholars or pastors such as Alan Ross, David Peterson, Bob Kauflin, or Daniel Block [review] alongside Gather God’s People.

Second, Croft and Adkins too quickly endorse the use of historic hymns for worship at the expense of others. They don’t address what actually constitutes a “traditional, historic hymn” except to suggest hymns have richer lyrics than newer songs. A theologically rich hymn, though, doesn’t necessarily make that hymn appropriate for congregational singing. Many hymns are clumsy melodically and almost always reflect the style of the generation in which they were written.

Additionally, Gather God’s People lacks resource suggestions for song choices. Croft and Adkins acknowledge congregations have different musical emphases (arts-integrated, contemporary, expressionistic, jazz, Latino, Southern gospel, and so on) and that leaders “can thoughtfully adapt many of these planning practices into their settings” (77). They then suggest songs from the Baptist Hymnal (1991) and the Trinity Hymnal (1961). These resources may be helpful in certain settings, but neither accomodates the diverse settings mentioned above.

Perhaps a better way forward is to take their own advice on the matter of song selections and song types. No congregation is the same. Each exists in different contexts with different tastes. Therefore, we ought to remember the exhortation that “worship planners should prioritize the congregation’s needs and interests (Phil. 2:3–4) in their planning practices” when choosing songs (75). Worship planners implement what the Bible regulates for worship but should be adept at knowing their own contexts for other elements. Context should be a factor—not the factor—in determining the style and instrumentation of worship music. The New Testament doesn’t regulate historic hymns, so flexibility and creativity is warranted.

Croft and Adkins wrote this book “in the hope that young ministers would have a useful resource as they enter pastoral ministry” (117). In my view, they achieve this goal. We need the Spirit’s help, since planning worship is hard work. In Gather God’s People, Croft and Adkins provide a faithful guide for doing just that.

Croft & Adkins do a fantastic job balancing the practical side of ministry and the theological underpinnings. I love that the book is both accessible & challenging at the same time. This book will really help you think biblically about how & why we worship.

Very Helpful

I have been to WDW many times and we're planning a trip to Disneyland Paris. This guide, by a former Disneyland Paris CM, was a great read. It has already helped save money with one suggestion, and others seem like they will help as well. If you're planning to visit Disneyland Paris for the first time, it's not like there are many other guides out there to choose from. This one has depth and covers the rides, the area and offers advice on many aspects of the parks. We enjoyed it and recommend it.

Handy, Comprehensive Overview

I haven't taken to e-readers and have always used Birnbaum's guides for trips to Walt Disney World in Florida, so I was hoping I would be able to find a physical guidebook for a trip to Disneyland Paris. This was the most comprehensive printed book I could find regarding the resort. Although it lacks the depth and detail found in Birnbaums guides, the book still provided a good amount of handy information which helped us plan our trip. There are some awkward sentences since the book seems to be written by somebody who doesn't primarily speak English, but this is only a minor complaint (there are few spelling/grammatical errors otherwise).

Great give-away Bibles

These thin New Testaments are perfect for giving away. I offer them to street people who are asking for money. I always enclose a bill inside the Testament & am always pleased at how many street people are so happy to have a Bible they can slip into their backpack. Most of those I've given out I have been able to follow up on & the majority actually do read this little Bible. It's a great outreach tool for a really good price.

For giving away

We buy these in quantity for giving away to people. They have some additional information in the front that would help someone new to the Bible. It has a few page explanation of the unfolding of the Bible. It has a one page explanation and encouragement about following Jesus. I wish there was more in there for evangelistic purposes, but it's good for the price.

I NIVer thought...

This was my first time reading the NIV version of the bible, and while different than the KJV I love, there is just as much good to be had here.
My only complaint would be that the book is flimsy, the pages thin, and the book easily, well, ruined.
But it's only two dollars! Definitely worth it.

Gotta go back to Janapath

India has been on my list of places to travel for some time now. I visited the country when I was in the U S Army some decades ago and I've wanted to go back since then. Shaku Sharma, the author has created this book, listing and detailing the various places to visit in Delhi, both Old Delhi and new. I would want to organize my own tour of places like the Janpath Market and the monument at Akshardham. Heck, I'd like to visit all the places she mentioned even though I might take 2-3 days. The photos included in the book along with the sites listed is wonderful

I loved this informative guide and am amazed at the wondrous sites to be found. From tombs and forts to towers and gardens the places to see are endless and Shalu Sharma did an amazing job bringing them to life and giving me the longing to travel to these wondrous places. I love that the author added so many links to add to this guide, don't forget to click on them, you will feel like you are already traveling. Lots of information, great pictures and an author that knows how to bring other destinations to the reader make this book a must have!
