Excellent replacement for my well-worn 1990s version of same. I'm off to Spain for the fifth time in 17 years and the Michelin map has always proved a great source of information. It's more about the author than the place.

There were some interesting facts about Gatlinburg, but more abut the author, her husband, her children, her country of origin, her extended family...even other towns near Gatlinburg. What information the book did contain related to Gatlinbug could have been obtained from any tourist article or a brief visit to the area. I had expected more of a "behind the scenes" experience.

When I published, "From Machete Fights to Paradise, the Machete Fighters of the Dominican Republic" back in 2012 I knew it would be a controversial book. Just how controversial, I wasn't sure. But, I knew it would cause a stir. Well, it definitely has and people are talking. I wrote the book because I believed the Dominican Republic deserved to be put on the martial arts map, so to speak. Through my research, I discovered it is one of the last places in the world where people actually duel with real, live swords. Being a long-time martial artist I had to look into this more. Why does it happen? Where does it happen (what parts of the country)? Why doesn't anyone in the martial arts world know about this? I attempted to answer these questions and tell the stories of different duels in the Dominican in my book. It is a cultural study, and a study to get the Dominican recognized for its martial arts prowess.Sword fights do not look like the movies. Martial arts that focus on the sword often become sanitized over time. Sword duels are barbaric and chaotic. It is a struggle between life and death. No matter how skilled you are, they are an extremely dangerous affair. For cultural reasons men (and sometimes women) still duke it out with real swords in the Dominican. Some are untrained, while others are highly skilled sword fighters few would ever want to willingly cross paths with.-Daniel DiMarzio

About the Author
Daniel DiMarzio was born on the Army Base in Fort Campbell, Kentucky in 1982. He graduated from Peirce College in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Concentration in Management and is a member of Delta Mu Delta, International Honor Society in Business Administration. He is also a graduate of the Pennsylvania School of Muscle Therapy.He is the author of "Jujutsu in Japan to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in America," "From Machete Fights to Paradise, The Machete Fighters of the Dominican Republic," "Finding the Real Japan, Stories from the Land of the Rising Sun" and "A Story of Life, Fate, and Finding the Lost Art of Koka Ninjutsu in Japan." Daniel is also the owner of the "Winds of Japan Shop."Daniel lived in Japan for two years where he owned and operated a business in the Kanto region. While living in Japan he continued his study of the martial arts. He has also spent time in the Dominican Republic, studying the use of blades by the Dominicans. Daniel is the founder of the "Dominican Martial Arts Association."He has studied various martial arts including Systema, Banke Shinobinoden (Koka and Iga Bujutsu, Ninjutsu etc.), Yawara (Japanese Jujutsu) and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ).Daniel is currently a member of "Snake Pit U.S.A." and is training in Catch as Catch Can Wrestling (Submission Grappling) and MMA.

It is real and raw

Everything Daniel mentions in his book is real. You just need to talk to a real Dominican some one from el barrio or from the country side. Doctors in the emergency room of any hospital in Santo Domingo or in any of the cities will testify about the many times they had to assist wounded individuals from machete fights. The use of the machete in Dominican life is linked to its History as well as the daily life of today.

It's rare to read a book about such a violent subject. I've always enjoyed these types of stories. Stories about real life violence. Savage true life tales. Daniel Dimarzio did a fantastic job taking me from my bedroom to the mean streets of santo Domingo where anything goes. You live and die by the edge of the blade. I highly recommend this book to any student on the violent nature of man. 5 stars. Fantastic.

Mr. Dimarzio has done a great job at cutting thru all the romantic, Hollywood nonsense surrounding blade encounters and has presented a realistic, gritty look at what can and does happen with sharp steel! A great book that deserves to be on the bookshelf of everyone who's serious about blades!

Hilarious.This happens in 21st Century!

If I would not have lived here in Antigua for five years already, I might have thought this book can only be
the product of a lunatic mind.

But no, many of the figures in the book are hiding their real identities behind fictitious names,either self chosen or given to them based on their action. And nobody bothers getting to know their real names. They are all really living human beings.The chance to meet most of them at the expatriate get togethers in Parque Central is highly probable.

They are the incarnated proofs of Jimmy Buffets ballad "Down to the Banana Republic".

One might think the gold rush is over? Here in Guatemala rushes of any kind are program and occur to the surface everyday.
Fortune hunters around every corner.Indigenous and Gringos,on the a first look living peaceful together, make Guatemala a creative and explosive community the same time.
Where else you can find scheme organizers like Ponzi Bob sitting with their victims peaceful on the same park bench, well knowing that the arm of US Law is too short to reach them for justice or help?

Some of the protagonists are also reminding of Steinbeck's "Tortilla Flat" with the same greed and never tiring search for booze and cheap amusements of all kinds.

I read this book in two hours so I can promise: it is better entertainment than the most action movies. For the price less than a half bottle of local rum.

Only Mike Sherer finds the right words for the daily crazy events in one of the worlds last refuge for real adventures.

Great, fun read and having lived in Antigua

Great, fun read and having lived in Antigua, Guatemala for 5 years the cast of characters are very familiar. I have to say ,Bob, the name sake of the book was an extremely generous and gracious guy to me and I will always consider him a good friend. His sister is also one of the most delightful characters in Antigua. This book brings back memories of some of my own Guatemalan adventures and it will be great to have in the Kindle to re-read and help re-fresh the memories of Antigua, Guatemala.

Wonderful artifact of the dawn of automobile travel

This reproduction of the original 1946 guide to Route 66 is an invaluable companion for any trip on the Mother Road. Not only does it give you a feel for what the road was like at the dawn of America's love-affair with automobile traffic, but it gives you a feel for the psychology of those pioneers who attempted to drive the Route.
While we're now accustomed to well-marked Interstates with easily located on and off ramps, early cross-country routes were less highway and more stitched and patched collections of local roads, filled in with connectors and dotted with small towns. The map was, in essence, the route itself. Following these early routes was not trivial, and drivers had to take caution not to find themselves stranded without food, lodging or fuel.
Rittenhouse's guide was the first comprehensive effort to assuage fears of long-distance car travel, and provide a mile-by-mile guide to services and sights along Route 66. While most of the sites (and most of the services) he documents are long-gone, the sense of wonder that is Route 66, and the thrill of coasting into the cities through which it threads, remains fully intact. No one should drive Route 66 without a copy of this in the glove box. Doing so would rob your of a good deal of the road's history.
Note to West Coasters: though the book is arranged from Chicago to LA, it can just as easily be read backwards for the Eastbound trip.

A fabulous read and a better drive!

This book reads like a good fireside friend, or an uncle, or even Tom Snyder in his famous Roadside Companion. It's a wonderful spin back in time to the period just before "Getting your kicks" became the American pastime, and provides a postcard view of the towns, cities and countryside that was America not so long ago. As an 8-time veteran of Route 66 roadtrips (and all within the last 5 years), I have to admit I'm chomping at the bit to get back out on the road and try to find traces of some of the landmark places and hamlets Rittenhouse has recorded in this highly usable travel guide. Kudos to the U of New Mexico Press for reissuing this book as a facsimile of the original (no updates save for a warm intro to the new edition by the author himself!), and doing so at a very accessible price point. A must have for any 66 roadie's collection.

Fun historical kitsch guide

The road out west from Chicago to LA can be tedious at times, and this cheap and fun little guide was a great way to pass the time. It's an exact reprint of the 1946 first edition about HIghway 66. I was able to call out towns and gas stations that were now in a shambles or abandoned on the side of the road. Fun book, right price, and it made my trip more interesting.

Warning: you will not be able to put this book down. The title does not match the book. It is a hilarious memoir of traveling through Europe ... honestly. The authors unravel time and open your mind to the romance of learning about yourself and where you fit into the world. Humor and reflection unite on this tour.
Only turbulence ... Josh, you've left me feeling like I need to quit my job and catch up on Netflix. I think you need a reality show of your own!
Jess, your reflections are beyond your years. Your words will change lives.

Be Anxious for Nothing

This book is for every day of the Month. I did not realize it was that type of book but, it has been such a blessing to me to read it daily. Because I have been anxiously awaiting the Lord's direction in my life, this book has been a comfort to me....showing me that I must be still and know that He is God and that He has a time and place for everything.

The Best Basic Madrid Guide for a Great Price

This is the best guide for getting to know Madrid quickly and for getting around efficiently. My Spanish friends were impressed with how much I accomplished without their help. Then when we did things together, it was a treat for them as well as for me. I have bought this guide for several friends who wanted me to tell them what to do while they were in Madrid. This guide did most of the explaining. I will be returning to Madrid with the latest version of this guide in early 2015 plus a wonderful more detailed guide in Spanish that I purchased in Madrid on my last trip. Once in Madrid I will pick up the weekly Guia de Ocio, which gives information on specific events (films, dance, theater, music, etc) and their venues as well as the nearest metro line stop. However, my main guide will still be this one.

Easy to use and very helpful!

I do like this series of guides. Very easy to use and gets right to the point, describing not-to-miss attractions, especially good is you have a limited amount of time. Filled with great photographs, this guide is much more than a simple "Top 10" . In includes maps, restaurants, hotels, lots of history and lots of general advice for getting around, banking, etc. I have used this series of guides for several years in several countries and cities and found them very helpful,

Lots Of Padding, Basic Content

There doesn't seem to be a good guidebook to Madrid for someone who wants more than the absolute basics. I bought this thinking it might be useful, as some top 10's are. Maybe it is, if you just want to see the most common tourist sites and go to all the tourist places in Madrid.

A lot of the book is padding, including a Spanish phrase chapter.

In the end. I decided to take a used 2011 Time Out Madrid guide
