The Perfect Book for Expats with Kids
By Amazon Customer
I am an expat. At the time I write this, I have been in Boquete, Panama for seven months. My wife and I are retired here, and a more beautiful place cannot be found.

So, why did I buy a book about raising children overseas? Mine are all grown now. Well, while doing my investigation concerning where we should live overseas, I read just about every book I could find on moving to and living in Panama. You can count the good ones on the fingers of one mangled hand. This is one of the good ones.

I was curious about this particular book for two reasons. One, it's about Panama and expats. Two, it's the first (and only) one I have seen on the subject of expatriating that was about how to handle your kids. As far as it goes towards handling how to move (read "expatriate") to Panama, there are a couple of books that do a much more thorough job. However, this book isn't about how an adult successfully manages the change. This book is about how to help your KIDS do it. So, how good a job does it do?

First, the writer has excellent credentials; she is a psychologist...a psychologist with kids. Second, it's very well written. How often have you said, "Boy what a great book. I couldn't put it down." Well, I couldn't put this one down. It's a perfect mixture of professional advice and personal anecdotes. I came away from this read with a better understanding, not only of how to handle kids in our new environment, but also how to handle myself. If I had read this book when my kids were young, I would have been a better parent --- no matter where I was living.

Great primer for anyone considering a move abroad with kids *gulp*
By Susanne J. Bostrom
What an amazing resource for anyone considering a move abroad with kids! Covers, in detail, everything from the practical (such as things you may not have thought to bring and schooling choices), the cultural (with funny and real world advice on how to not offend your new countrymen and how to gently assimilate your child into local culture), to the emotional (with insightful advice on how to help your children and yourself make it through what seems like a daunting transition to a new country). The author has a witty yet pragmatic voice that I found not only very helpful, but very entertaining, as well. Let me feeling, "We can do this!!!"

By claire b. fields
Wow, I am so incredibly thrilled I came across this book. As a mom who is considering an extended stay in Latin America, I really needed the guidance and assurance that I wasn't making a terrible decision for my kids. I had been going back and forth wondering if our family was making the right choice, and after reading this book, we are going to do it! Elizabeth Ballard's book provided me with invaluable advice that put me at ease.
Her family survived, no THRIVED and ours will too!
THANK YOU for this terrific book!
