Shenzhen moves quickly. New skyscrapers sprout-up with no warning. Imagine how long it would take you to discover the nuances of this ever changing city. Nearly no one that lives in Shenzhen was born in Shenzhen.

It is fair to say that even the local cab drivers, aren’t familiar with much of what you will find in Shenzhen: The Book. Even more, the authors, Karen & Ted Rule, are true authorities on Shenzhen—they've known Shenzhen since before it was a city.

Ted & Karen first laid eyes on Shenzhen in 1971 when they took a taxi to the Lok Ma Chau police station in Hong Kong’s New Territories. Not much was there.

Since then, Shenzhen exploded into one of the most modern Chinese Mainland cities, while—at the same time—it’s the fastest growing city in the world.

Karen was originally a historian by training and she immersed herself in the fascinating but little known history of the area. Ted expanded his already considerable waistline by sampling the culinary delights and sneakily recording them. And thus this tome was born.

Where else are you going to get the kind of insights and perspective then from a couple who experienced the unfathomable growth of Shenzhen from the beginning of China’s economic reforms and Shenzhen’s boom?

Review
"Ted Rule and his wife, Karen, have been watching Shenzhen grow from a sleepy village amid the rice paddies to a throbbing city of 14 million people in forty years. They have now documented every aspect of it - its history, language, industry, resorts, culture, as well as the opportunities for shopping and eating, plus a step-by step guide for intending visitors."
--Geoffrey Luck, an ABC journalist for 26 years

"...a great job on both describing what you can do and see in Shenzhen and conveying the atmosphere of this metropolis that, only 40 years ago, was just a village."
--Furio Fu, founder of Sapore di Cina

"Shenzhen: The Book is like one of those lofty bas relief panoramas you see in hotel lobbies and state rooms across China, with the familiar background of mystical mountains formed through millennia of tectonic shift. But in the scene described in this book, the cliffs are overlaid with innumerable luxury high-rises, neon boulevards and bridges, and shopping malls, roller coasters and trade towers peek out of the subtropic tangle."
--Greta Bilek, author of China Tea Leaves

A very thorough guide to Shenzhen. Great for new comers. Also great for seasoned Shenzheners.
By JP J.
Shenzhen, unlike Beijing, Shanghai, or Hong Kong, is a city that is relatively unknown to most Westerners. It's a very young city, but it's also a huge metropolis with many diverse neighbourhoods. This is a great guide to get to know the city. I've lived in Shenzhen for 2 years and I definitely learned about new places from reading this book.

A Great Read and Useful Tool
By Sid
This is a gem of a book – an important book that will be an eye-opener for those with little knowledge of present-day China. Karen and Ted Rule have produced an easy, but highly informative read, one that will surely be the baseline – the gold standard - for the flood of Shenzhen books bound to follow as the world sits up and takes notice of this latest Chinese super city now asserting itself as a business powerhouse, cultural center and tourist destination.

The book begins with a description of the Shenzhen area as the authors saw it 1975 on their way from Kowloon to Canton (Guangzhou) – a ninety-mile trip of eight hours in the early 70’s. Ten months earlier, I too made this trip and can attest to the sleepy scene that greeted the Rules -“there was nothing there”.

The authors provide a short, but lively and insightful account of the development of Shenzhen from the third century BC, then a center of the salt trade, through its designation by Deng Xiaoping as a Special Economic Zone in the eighties, to the present day with a population of 14m, the largest conurbation in China. The husband and wife team clearly have a deep love for China having immersed themselves in its history, politics and culture over many years. It seems they were actively involved in Shenzhen’s economic development from their base in Hongkong in the eighties. Apparently fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese they speak with great authority with their light but often profound analysis of the city’s political and economic rise to prominence and the factors that sparked the Shenzhen miracle.

But this is not a history book, nor an economic text. Far from it. It is intended as an easy-to-follow guide to this most modern of cities. Having set the scene the authors go on to describe life in the city and the area around. They have included coffee-table quality pictures throughout. The Rules provide a personal account of their visits to “Top Places to See” including nearby beaches and tourist attractions with helpful tips on transportation, accommodation and daily living. The book is peppered throughout with flashes of droll humor making for an enjoyable, engrossing read.

For anyone planning to visit southern China for pleasure or for business, or anyone struggling to understand its evolution over the last half century this book is an essential tool.

Extraordinary insights from Old China Hands.
By Alfred Croucher
When a venerable old China hand couple turn their hands to researching that extraordinary economic experiment, Shenzhen, others of the same ilk have to sit up and take notice. Ted Rule went into Beijing in 1974 as a language proficient trade official when the Australian Embassy had just been opened. Those who know him still smile at the recollection of his many anecdotes, some so amusing that a school of cynics exist who question their veracity. I don't. Ted was my mentor when I struggled with being a trade consultant in Beijing in the early 80's. We were trying to connect Australian companies with the one official in China responsible at the time for buying their product. We were fortunate enough to make some good contacts and several clients prospered.

Shenzhen:The Book is replete with the little ironies and wry remarks Ted and Karen are known and loved for. The exhaustive research provides insights no tourist guide could provide and comes only from a long experience and love of their subject. Read the book. Even if you don't know them, you will come to realize why this couple are held in such reverence and affection in the China watching community.
