Excellent resource!

Spiritual warfare is one of the most misunderstood aspects of Christian living today. The reasons for this area many. You and I live in a culture that emphasizes spirituality from a secular worldview. In this culture truth is often relegated to how we feel. Thus everyone is spiritual or religious. This is one of the reasons New Age spirituality and Eastern Mysticism are so popular today. It’s easy to accept religion if it’s according to how we feel and not according to truth. After all no one wants to be told what to believe. No one wants to coerce anyone into believing anything. Or so our culture believes. Yet false religion always tickles men’s ears and leads them away from God. Instead, our culture preaches a watered down gospel. The truth is that the Christian life is one of war. Christianity is not your best life today, but rather is a life of peace with God and spiritual war against a real but vanquished foe in the world, the flesh, and the devil. All of this is reason to be thankful for the work of Bob Bevington with his latest book Good News About Satan A Gospel Look at Spiritual Warfare.

The book seeks to look at spiritual warfare in the first five chapters by recognizing the kingdom of darkness, their allies, weapons, limitations, and maneuvers. In chapter six, Bob considers how Jesus is victorious over Satan and His kingdom through His death, burial, and resurrection. Chapter seven teaches readers how to resist the devil. Chapter eight looks at helping the demonized, and then in chapter nine explores the glory of God revealed in Jesus Christ. The book concludes with two appendixes looking at learning from Satan’s names and verses to memorize when engaging in spiritual warfare.

This book is very needed. Often times Christian books on spiritual warfare teach things that the Bible doesn’t teach. There are few books on this topic that I recommend and Bob’s is one of them. Bob’s teaching is clear, biblical, and helpful. The best Christian books are biblical, practical, and personal. This book classifies in this category which is why I highly recommend you pick it up. This book will teach you the Bible’s teaching on this topic, and how to engage in spiritual warfare to the glory of God. As I’ve mentioned the Christian life is one of war. We are both saints and sinners. Saint in our position and sinners in that we have not yet been perfected. The Christian life in other words is an already not yet. We are saved and yet our salvation has not yet been completed. The reality of our war is all around us. This is why we are to take up the armor of God as outlined in Ephesians 6. This is also why you should heed Bob’s teaching of the Word. God uses saints who love His Word and earnestly seek after His righteousness. Bob is such a saint and he faithfully exposits the text with a clear view to help and edify the saints so they may be holy, happy, and effective servants of the Risen Christ.

This excellent book will help new and seasoned Christians to grow in their understanding of God’s Word and the reality of spiritual warfare all around them. This would be an excellent book to use for Sunday school or for small groups to go through. This book could also be used by pastors in their study on spiritual warfare. Bloggers and writers could also take up this book and use the material and quote from it in their writing. I highly recommend this book and pray the Lord would use this book powerfully to awaken slumbering Christians to the truth that all around them a war wages for the salvation of the lost.

Excellent Primer on Spiritual Warfare

Life is a battlefield. It seems if it is not one thing it is another in our daily lives from dealing with issues at work, home, mounting bills, problems around the world, a screaming kid, or you name it. Also amongst the battles we face are those of fighting the urge to sin and break God’s commands. No matter what battle we seem to be engaged it, one important truth to remember is they are rooted in the spiritual warfare that rages each and every single day. Bob Bevington, in his excellent book Good News About Satan: A Gospel Look at Spiritual Warfare, explores what spiritual warfare is all about, how we can know the enemy and his tactics, and most importantly, the reality that we can have confidence the victory has been won.

There are many books on the market that deal with matters of spiritual warfare, some good and many not so much. Many authors forget the answers to his battle that wages against spiritual forces in heavenly places are found within the pages of Scripture. I firmly believe that biblical focus on biblical answers is where Bevington’s book shines the brightest. Now there is nothing wrong with some quotes from godly men on a particular topic. With that said, there is something refreshing about an author who writes a book with the sole source of information being the pages of God’s Word.

Bevington does an excellent job of outlining the playing field. Just as an army going into battle must understand their enemy, the ground they are fighting over, the enemy’s tactics, the enemy’s weakness, and the strengths of your own troops before going into battle, so to should the believer analyze these same issues when battling Satan. As Bevington so rightly notes, “As members of the kingdom of God, all Christians are unavoidably involved in the conflict – each one of us is commanded to engage in active resistance.” Thus, sitting on the sidelines of this war is not an option.

Also of note in this book is Bevington’s apt evaluation of the strategy of Satan. It is important to understand that not every evil thing that occurs in life is the work of a demonic force. There is an alignment of forces arrayed against humanity that all seek to trip us up. These three pernicious foes are “the word, the flesh, and the devil.” Scripture provides us the blueprint for being able to identify which of these foes is at work in a given situation, and Bevington does a marvelous job of walking the reader how to read the battlefield and to properly identify which attack is being thrust.

There are some who seem to feel as if the battle against the enemy is a losing proposition. Everywhere we turn, it seems as if heartache, strife, and godlessness reign supreme. Bevington addresses that wrong attitude, noting the enemy has weaknesses given he is not God, and most importantly, Jesus has won the victory over the enemy on the cross. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus took the battle to the enemy’s own camp, utterly defeating him. While in this life we will continue to endure trouble, hardship, and temptation, the believer can remain confident as they fight this spiritual battle that the victory is complete. This is a reminder we all need each and every day and Bevington saliently and gently reminds the reader of exactly Who is on our side and the reality that King Jesus has secured the battlefield.

Furthermore, Bevington discusses how the battle must be fought and what weapons we have been provided by God by which engage in this conflict of the ages. He notes we are to first remember who we are in Christ. We are the children of God and God takes care of His children. Additionally, Bevington comments that when we put on the full armor of God, it must be done with a gospel-centered approach, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus who won the victory. Moreover, Bevington reminds the reader that to resist the temptation of the enemy, we must humbly submit to God as well as confess our sin and repent of wrongdoing. These are all keys to a successful battle strategy and they are all found in our battle manual – The Word of God.

I highly recommend this book for all believers. We are all engaged in spiritual warfare whether we want to believe so or not. Bevington’s powerful book is Scripture centered, gospel centered, and timely. Those who have been sitting on the sidelines hoping the battle will pass them by desperately need to read this book as a call to arms. Those who have been fighting the good fight for many years also need to read this book as a source of encouragement. As the title of this book so rightly notes, the good news about Satan is he is a defeated enemy and God has provided His people the tools to resist temptation and to be the warriors of the kingdom we have been called to be.

When you know a story ends in joy or 'happily ever after', the struggles, battles, pitfalls, and brokenness of the main characters along the way tend to lose their fangs. Knowing victory and that the future is everything wrong being put to right can cast away anxiety and despair. The book of Revelation ends the story of the Bible with the great hero and King defeating our great enemy, Satan, once and for all (Rev. 20:7). Bob Bevington has reminded us of this gospel truth in "Good News About Satan" . Life is no fairy tale, and no one needs to read a book to know it is a real and hard daily existence much more like a war zone than a playground. But in this accessible, readable, and winsome work Bevington helps us to recognize the limitations, weapons, maneuvers, and allies of our enemy. And the glorious fact that Jesus Christ is victorious allows us the freedom to take courage and heart; we may have this enemy like a prowling lion seeking to devour us, but we have an even greater savior who gave us his armor and the pronouncement that it is really and truly "finished." We are his. But just like the Battle of New Orleans was still fought after the treaty of Ghent had been signed ending the War of 1812, we still are engaged in such a battle against spiritual forces and a serious enemy. I strongly recommend and encourage all believers to help equip their Christian living and understanding of spiritual warfare by reading "Good News About Satan." About the Author
After undertaking several visit to South America, John Hall developed an interest in exploring its three giants. He had visited Patagonia and also hiked over and through sections of the Andes mountain chain (giants one and two). Then for South America's "third" giant. With time, he mustered sufficient courage to take a night flight from Sao Paulo to Manaus, and to begin his quest to interpret the sublime splendor found while plying the waters of the Amazon River, running from Brazil's interior towards the river's meeting with the saline waters of the Atlantic.

I'm glad I did

I don't usually read travel stories, however I made an exception with this as it was written by Dr. Hall. I'm glad I did. It feels very awe inducing as he tries to explain places and experiences that are in many ways indescribable. There's also a lot of interests characters and a good sense of humor to go along with the very smart observations. I didn't know much about south america going in, and a chapter in I find myself wanted to know more. I guess I'll keep reading.

Game changer!

As someone that had never been to New York and wanted to avoid tourist traps, this guide got me really excited and gave me confidence that I could have a unique experience. I found it really easy to navigate on the go and the short descriptions were super handy. Usually, I get overwhelmed reading travel guides. But the author gives very visual descriptions that simplified my planning process. I also found that it was really helpful to use when planning a trip with a traveling partner that didn't share my interests. We both found activities we loved. For example, I'm a night owl and a foodie, but my co worker was an early riser and likes to exercise. We agreed to each try one thing from the guide we normally wouldn't have done on our own and had a blast! We went to Lucky Cheng's drag queen restaurant- so much fun. The next morning we kayaked from Staten Island. Great views! Fond memories:)

A Modern Day Frank Laubach! The Relationship With Christ We Thirst For!

Consecration. It's more than behavior modification. It's more than conformity to a moral code. It's more than doing good deeds. Something deeper, something truer. The word consecrates means to set yourself apart. By definition, consecration demands full devotion. Mark challenges the believer to go ALL IN! Hold nothing back. If your life is anything like mine, there were things I wanted to hold on to. There were times when as Mark says, I asked Jesus to follow me rather than me follow Him. No more! I know that I am not perfect. I never will be. But thru Mark Batterson, God has asked me to at least choose perfectly. Choose to go all in and all out for the All in All. There is a fear in such a childlike faith. Mark thru this book has helped inspire in me such a faith and cast aside the fear. He says in this book "Consecration is an ever-deepening love for Jesus, a childlike trust in the heavenly Father, and a blind obedience to the Holy Spirit". Those who are afraid of such a faith in Jesus and who hear the words, God can't be trusted will hate this book. Those who ask themselves the question, "How close of a relationship can I possibly have with God and His Son Jesus", may have just found the inspiration thru this book, to find out. God has used Mark Batterson once again, to inspire in me an even higher surrender. Thank you.

Although simplistic and filled with Christian cliches, underneath the fluff is a much needed message for the simplistic, cliched, fluffy Christian of today. Not written for the current readers of J. I. Packer (Knowing God) or A. W. Tozer (The Pursuit of God) but written for the insta-gram, face-bookers of today. Hopefully, after reading All In, some of today's Christians will begin a quest to grow deeper in a relationship with the Great I Am. Perhaps many readers will be compelled to pick up the Bible, Packer or Tozer in a deepening desire to be fully All In.

Wanted to like this book, but found that it's just more of the same that's being churned out by the Evangelical community. Do more, give more, serve more, evangelize more and do it bigger and faster than ever before. Don't bother with where God has ALREADY put you...get out there and BE SOMETHING BETTER, (even if God has not called you to do so).Regardless of Batterson's intended message it was still all about "I". I do. I give. I grow. I build. I serve...I, I, I. An ABSOLUTE must-have if traveling with kids to Cambodia!!!!

If you are traveling with kids to Cambodia, these guides are a MUST! We visited with our 8 and 6 year olds, and the “Cambodia Kids!” activity books not only taught the kids a lot about Cambodia in general, but gave them fun, independent activities to do while visiting Angkor Wat, so that we adults could also enjoy the temple.

The book is organized into “before you go” and “while there” sections, and includes age-appropriate stories, activities, and facts. The kids LOVED having their own guidebooks and were so excited and engaged throughout the trip. My 6 year old son really enjoyed doing the scavenger hunt activities at the temple & coloring in the pictures in the Cambodia Scout Guide. The instructions were simple enough that I could give him quick directions, and he would stay occupied with each activity for awhile. My 8 year old daughter (who had the Cambodia Trailblazer Guide) loved reading the story and doing the drawing and writing activities. I love that the books also encouraged them to engage with the culture—teaching about how to greet others, the foods that are eaten and even how to use a squat toilet!

I have a friend who recently set out on a road trip. He had no real plan. Just a vague idea that he wanted to drive around the country and "see what's out there." As of this writing, he has run out of money and is stranded in a small town in Virginia, far from home. He had to take a job fixing motorcycles to raise some cash. Yet he is happier than I have ever known him to be! He's calling this the most exciting time of his life. He's meeting new people and learning new things. He's free.

I have a definite soft spot for stories like this. In spite of whatever hardships such adventurers face, I always wish I was right there with them. Which is why I was so excited to read Miriam Marston's "What I Learned In Oxford."

Miriam is a lot like that friend of mine. One day she decided, mostly on a whim, to move across the ocean to Oxford. With no real plan, no job lined up and no idea what the future held, she embarked on a journey. Finding true adventure, like finding true love, requires a deliberate act of the will. And the rewards, also like love, are immeasurable. Thank goodness she wrote this book so that we are able to come along with her. We find ourselves identifying with her as she goes from one "fish out of water" experience to the next. We're inside her head, learning as she learns.

It's a fun, engaging book and well worth the small price.

I absolutely love Miriam's album The Luggage of an Optimist. She is so talented and thoughtful. What I Learned in Oxford gave me a better understanding of how the songs came about. I can hear an echo of the music while reading her entertaining account of life in Oxford.

I am about 20% of the way through the audio book and I think it’s fantastic. The story is, in my opinion, truly captivating and I’m excited to hear more. Furthermore, the voice of the German narrator is very pleasant and her acting skills superb. These positive qualities should sweeten the deal for anyone grappling with German.

In addition, the German translation is of very high quality. This is an authentic text and I would therefore recommend it for intermediate to advanced learners.

As a learner of German myself from the United States and as an educator with an advanced university degree in TESoL, I can affirm that the pedagogical concept of this language tool is sound. The combination of the e-book with the audio files is perfect for those with verbal, aural and visual learning styles. Even those with more kinesthetic tendencies can benefit from the suggestion laid out in the section “Audiobook Companion” of speaking along with the text.

In addition, the recommendations provided at the beginning of the audiobook to listen to the story again and again and take note of improving comprehension are helpful and motivating.

Overall, the marvelous story, the professional narration and the well founded educational advice make this a worthy investment for anyone who would like to expand their understanding of the modern German language.

Wow! What a story!

I bought this to help me relearn German. I wanted something other than more krimis. I became so entranced with the story that I found myself reading faster and longer and all the while in German! Excellent story, characters with depth, and quickly helped me pick up my forgotten German.

Great learning benefits

This audio/textbook - Learn German: by Reading Fantasy - is the ideal learning material for fantasy fans who are interested in improving their skills in German language at the same time. The educational strategy consists of 'immersing' the learner in the story in the simple, well written and pleasantly narrated target language, and only after that, the learner is invited to listen and read the same part of the story in his native language. By daily practicing the listening and reading to the right extent (one to two chapters a day), I can well imagine the learner being able to fully get the main ideas of most sentences, and the daily struggle and efforts will soon show results, by helping the learner to hear out specific, new words and select them for the unconscious memorizing process. However, I have to say that the language level may be too difficult for pure beginners, and I assume that this book is intended for people who have already acquired some basics in German, because I believe only then, the quick learning potential can be exploited at full extent. Furthermore, the learner is not invited to speak and discuss the story in German, as far as my view on this goes, I think it would be a great idea to assure an internet platform for instance, where readers can exchange their impressions and theories about the story. Nevertheless, I am convinced that the method of combining interests (fantasy) and learning (German) is a great educational idea, and great learning benefits can therefore be promised.
