It is 1994 and an idealistic Vanessa Parker enters the world of international aid, bringing with her youth and passion to do good in the ‘Wild East’ of Ukraine after the sudden collapse of communism. Older, wiser, Dan laughs at Vanessa’s naivety. Corruption is rife. The mind-set of the Ukrainian people is at times impenetrable. Gritty and heartwarming

Here's a good read on multiple levels. The Road to Donetsk gives you an inside story of international aid, a young woman's psychological journey from innocence to experience and a love interest too. Not only this, but it's topical, set in currently beleaguered Ukraine. Diane Chandler's debut novel is backed by her own personal experience of aid programmes in this region: the countryside, the cities, the coalmines and the people all vividly alive. The women of the mining town outside Donetsk, the gold-toothed fixer Sasha, rumpled, appealing Dan, tetchy Irina -- so many good characters. And the visit to Chernobyl... stunningly beautiful, as well as eerie. I have to say that in the earlier part of the book I didn't take to Vanessa much; she seemed a bit of a lightweight, for all her yearning to help people. But the proof is in the pudding, because by the end I really really liked her a lot, loved the voice of the grown up married mother-of-two, still a helper but now wiser yet not cynical... as she says, 'a worthwhile use of a life.'

The Road to Donetsk

What a great read! It had me hooked right from the first pages. Diane Chandler certainly knows Ukraine and the world of international aid, at times I had to remind myself that this is a work of fiction, it is so well written and so true to fact. I found myself relating to all the characters. It opened my eyes to the realities of international aid and the lives of those who are instrumental in giving that aid - the frustrations they encounter, the corruption through which they have to negotiate to achieve their goals, the culture and mind sets of those they work alongside and the glowing dedication of people like, to begin with, a rather naive Vanessa and the more experienced Dan. Now I want to know more about Ukraine! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It would make a great film.

This is a book to satisfy both heart and head. From the beginning I was caught up in Vanessa’s passionate commitment to her work in overseas aid in the Ukraine, the complexities, frustrations and corruption (on both sides) of which are skilfully and entertainingly revealed through a cast of engaging characters. There is the motley (at times dodgy) crew of British co-workers as well as her more enigmatic Ukrainian colleagues ranging from the friendly Pasha and challenging Irina to the aloof Mrs T and the journalist Yaroslav. Some of the most powerful and delightful writing describes the wonderful women of Donetsk , championed by the glorious Svetlana, with whom Vanessa feels such a strong affinity. A country I knew nothing about sprang to life not just through the characters but the silky smooth writing delivers vivid descriptions of Kiev, the countryside, the mines, the villages, even a trip to Chernobyl. Vanessa’s other great passion interwoven with the aid story is her love affair with the somewhat world-weary America, Dan, but this is a relationship that comes at a price and the tension this creates held me to the end. At times I could get frustrated with Ness’s idealism but I never doubted her, and the tragic event which forces her to re-evaluate her beliefs makes for an emotionally satisfying conclusion.
