How refreshing to find a travel book that is so user-friendly - just select from one of the 41 enticing day trip titles, like "The Father of Invention", "Cycles and Revolutions", "The World's Largest Kaleidoscope" or "Birthplaces of American Art". At a glance, the map shows the distance to your destination. Then you are off and running (or probably driving)! The concise 3-5 page description of your Day Trip provides just the right amount of information about how to get there, what to do and where to eat to feed your mind and body for a wonderful and reenergizing day of exploration.

Great resource! Get ready for great weekends....

Minetor has uncovered gems even I, longtime New York City resident and Hudson Valley lover, did not know about. My copy sports a bushy fringe of stickies marking my summer ambitions. I love that she addresses the outdoorsy, the artistic, and the foodie opportunities in equal measure. With this book, you have a decent shot at proving Jerry Seinfeld wrong: there IS such a thing as fun for the WHOLE family. The book is chock-full of useful information, but avoids the dry tone of many guides. Minetor's prose makes it seem like your most adventurous and savvy buddy is riding shotgun.

Looking forward to discovering the Hudson Valley

The urge to jump in the car and explore never gets old for me, so I very much enjoyed discovering the many day trip ideas offered in this book. Randi offers an interesting mix of themes (art, history, lighthouses, wine) to catch one's attention and provides a host of venues and destinations to satisfy one's curiosity. There's something for everyone to discover, including this Western New Yorker. This book has put the Hudson Valley back on my radar. My first road trip will be to Bannerman Castle later this month.

Pretty pictures and little else

I was looking for a Lake Como travel book and everything else covered all the lakes or all of Milan region, etc. I bought this as there was almost nothing else. It was basically useless information scraped from tourist sites. I learned nothing and got a lot more information from the Lake Como sections of other books, even though these sections were just 5-10 pages.

I have been to Lke Como before. Days were spent as the mood decided. I am returning (as many do, see the first few pages) and want to select things i have really wanted to do and had not been able to. Althou the lake is for watching the clouds aroud the mountains, there are places if importance and this book provided me with many options. The times and tips on how to get to these places are clear an much appreciated. Thanks...

Sometimes a book read by the author can be a hit-or-miss listening experience. Even though an author may know how she meant something to be heard, she herself may not know how to deliver it that way. But this is not the case with Joni Eareckson Tada. She has a bright, clear, direct, and often-cheerful way of speaking that is always appropriate to the context. Tada, a quadriplegic, at one point calls her wheelchair "a place of healing." She explains this extraordinary statement with a conviction that says: This is what faith sounds like. A Serious, Hopeful Look at the Mysteries of Suffering & Divine Sovereignty in the Midst of Chronic Pain

Although Joni has written about suffering in previous books such as A Step Further and When God Weeps, she wrote this book to revisit the topic after experiencing two years of unrelenting chronic pain that still continues. Almost 60 years old, and a quadriplegic for 43 of them, this book chronicles a new chapter in her life. It is the fruit of Christian maturity as well as careful biblical reflection and takes a very practical, God-glorifying approach. The title, A Place of Healing, refers not only to "our wonderfully sovereign God" as our place of healing (page 12), but also to her wheelchair (page 52) as her place of inner growth and healing where God can be glorified the most.

One is introduced to suffering as an aspect of spiritual warfare in chapter 1. Chapter 2 addresses the real question regarding God and healing which is not whether God can heal but whether or not he will heal all those who truly come to him in faith. In chapter 3 one is introduced to Canadian missionary statesman Henry Frost who wrote the book Miraculous Healing, first published in 1931, which Joni considers the most sensible and balanced treatment on the subject of divine healing. She expounds on four key points on healing found in this book, adding her own insights. Chapter 4 provides five benefits to suffering, chapter 5 gives four answers to the question of "How can I go on like this?", and chapter 6 lays out eight ideas on how we bring Christ glory in a time of trial or limitation. Chapter 7 suggests several ways to gain a fresh, hopeful perspective, and chapter 8 meditatively reflects on heaven as a place of ultimate healing. Chapter 9 introduces us to some wonderful people her ministry came into contact with who spiritually overcame their "disabilities". The title of Chapter 10 speaks for itself: "Thank You, God, for This Wheelchair" which, again, takes us back to her wheelchair as a place of inner healing. There is also an Epilogue written months after the book was completed to provide an update of good news.

This is one book that gave me occasions to weep, to worship, and to wonder. I will certainly be referring back to it now and then and I've purchased Frost's book, Miraculous Healing, at Joni's recommendation. Although A Place of Healing is realistic, it is not pessimistic. It is full of Christ-centered hope and will be an encouragement for Christians who are suffering in different ways, providing empowerment to overcome. I highly recommend it.

When Faith Meets Pain and Suffering

Joni Eareckson Tada wrote this book in the midst of pain and suffering, from the trenches. Having prayed for healing, the answer was "no" or "not yet." How do you deal with that in your Christian life? How do you accept pain and suffering when you know God desires your health and wholeness? This book is all about that struggle with pain, suffering, and loving God through it. It is written with maturity, with experience, and with love.

The book is divided into ten chapters, that ask questions like: "what benefit is there to my pain?" and "how can I go on like this?"

Tada reaches into her almost forty years of experience as a quadraplegic to answer these questions, even in the midst of her own questioning.

As someone with a rare, treatable but incurable endocrine disease, I found this book to be of tremendous benefit. These are questions I have often struggled with, and her perspective, biblical insight and seasoned maturity brought a fresh breath of hope to me.

This book will be a terrific gift to someone you know who is suffering through disease, illness and pain.

Five stars, without question, for its authenticity.

One can only speculate how comforting the doctrine of God's sovereignty has been for this remarkable, saintly woman. I found this latest book of autobiography, reflections, and insight profoundly moving. While I maintain that A Step Further is Joni's most substantive book on human suffering, I can see how this latest volume provides another layer in an ongoing story, placed upon a firm foundation of faith tested in untold trials. New experiences, new insights are based on new struggles with chronic pain (and just prior to publication it's been learned that Joni has breast cancer...and not surprisingly, she hopes to encourage fellow cancer patients). We can read about her experiences, and yet although Joni is a gifted writer, even her words are inadequate; we can only imagine her struggle (and victory) in the grip of circumstances that would defeat most people. It's been said that suffering will make us either compassionate or bitter. Joni has had more suffering than most people ever will, and her heart for God and others shines through this wonderful book.

Good but missing the ENTIRE book of Proverbs!

I was very happy with this CD set until today when I discovered it's missing the ENTIRE book of Proverbs! I'm in the process of figuring out how to get this corrected by ChristianAudio. So hopefully, they will do the right thing and replace or send me audio files for Proverbs.
Otherwise this is a great no frills audio book of the Bible. The narrator has a pleasant voice and I'm happy just to put it on and just let the words flow out the speakers. I didn't need famous actors or a dramatic presentation although that's ok, too. If you just want to hear the Bible read to you in plain english and no music or dramatics, this is for you.

Great product at an amazing price

I purchased these cds for my father in law and he loves them! His eyes are bad so he cant see the words in the bible to read it, so he loves being able to pick what section he wants to listen to and they read the bible to him. The price was great compared to others that I found online and in stores!

Beautiful Pictures

I enjoyed this travelogue. Great title! Ms. Nussbaum's adventures and opinions of what she saw make for interesting reading. I loved that she included pictures and specific locations and experiences. I think I would've enjoyed the book more if she included more personal revelations...how her experiences changed her in some way.

Good overall map of the main islands

This is an overall map of all of the major islands. It is not heavy, and is laminated to protect it from rain, etc. It's a good map, well articulated and readable (better than many maps).

Here's my challenge: I am visiting 3 islands, and I ended up buying a book for each island, each with a map. When I am on Kauai, for example, all I need is a map of Kauai, not of the other islands. So I will probably rely on the maps in the books when I am staying on a particular island. That assumes that you have a book with good maps included. I strongly recommend books by Andrew Doughty, who lives in Hawaii: The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed, Oahu Revealed: The Ultimate Guide to Honolulu, Waikiki & Beyond, and Hawaii The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook. I haven't read his book Maui Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook, but I have no reason to believe that it isn't up to his excellent standards. All are available on Amazon.

This map, alone, is cheaper than one of the books, but if you are getting books anyway, I would argue for those mentioned above, with their good maps, instead of this map.

However, if you want a map, this is a reasonable general purpose alternative. It is of good quality for a traveler.

Travel like the pros

There's a lot of useful information here that could save the not-so-frequent flier a lot of time and aggravation. And Don't Be That Guy- when you read the book you'll understand what I mean. The cartoons are great- CAPTAIN Mano PHD looks at air travel as a pilot with a somewhat jaundiced, yet still affectionate eye.

This book could be useful if you are new to air travel or only fly occasionally. The cartoons are funny. However, if you fly more than a few times a year, it is far too basic and basically gives you the airlines perspective.
