Pollyanna from Down Under comes to Paris

The Accidental Renovator

Barbara Biggs is a real estate buff and even when visiting France for the first time she wont take a breather but trolls the internet for castles, farms and monasteries for sale. Since she can’t go to the countryside to visit the castles, she plays a rich American in order to see the inside of Paris apartments. The joke is on her when the ridiculously low offer she makes on an apartment is accepted.

Then follows a surreal period when she lugs an Australian hunk whose French is zero, to Paris, to renovate it. The hunk does a runner leaving Biggs, Pollyanna fashion, to renovate and navigate her way in a Paris peopled with larger than life characters. There’s Karim, playing rich lawyer and claiming his internet cafe and helping damsels in distress are favourite pastimes, who constantly repeats, “Health important, money not important” and tears 50 euro bills for dramatic effect, when Biggs asks for her money back. There’s Anastasia on her third half peanut, swearing she’s recovered from eating disorders. There’s distraught Rita, hanging out with a disagreeable young gay man the same age as her dead son. Then stunning Yvette who after suffering treatment from men, turns the tables and is a high-class call girl running the show; her desperate and clinging lover bought her the castle in which she lives and she often invites her ex-husband to parties.

Biggs also joins the “Lazy Pig Millionaires” whose project is to make a patented “Little Black Dress” and become rich but they all spend most of their time partying late into the night and having casual sex. At the heart of all this is pulsating Paris. Bewildering, bewitching, enticing, intoxicating. Paris lights have pulled Biggs and company like insects that are circling around, burning their wings, tumbling down, recovering, sometimes surviving and coming back for more.

Love the book and the apartment!

Loved this book! In fact, it inspired me to move to Paris to try living the French dream - but that's another story. The Accidental Renovator is very well written, you can actually get a feel for what it is like being a foreigner in Paris trying to renovate - with all the funny, frustrating, annoying, etc things that go with it. And, to top it all off, we have now returned as tourists to Paris and have actually stayed at Barbara's apartment - so wonderful to be able to enjoy the space that she created and wrote about. Highly recommend the book - and the apartment if you ever get to Paris.

Highly recommended!

Having never heard of Barbara Biggs but loving stories of people who get involved in overseas properties and learn life lessons, I found the premise of Accidental Renovator appealing. The author's ability to keep me reading voraciously to see 'what can possibly happen next?' is a credit to her talents. Humour is balanced with astute observations of Paris and the people she encounters. Because she refers to previous books, I have since read her two autobiographical novels (In Moral Danger and The Road Home) just as eagerly, though their subject matter is far from light.

A fascinating account of a first ascent

The Rev. Hudson Stuck was born in London in 1863, ordained as an Episcopalian clergyman in Texas and moved to Alaska in 1904 where he travelled widely and became known as the Archdeacon of the Yukon. In 1913 he instigated the first expedition to reach the South summit of Denali, the highest mountain in North America at 20,237 feet. "The Ascent of Denali" is Stuck's account of that expedition.

Leaving Nenana on 17 March 1913, the expedition carried more than one and a half tons of equipment by boat and dog sled to the base of the mountain before beginning the "ceaseless grind" via the Muldrow Glacier to the summit. During the ascent a fire destroyed much of the climbers' food and equipment. Despite that, the summit was reached on 7 June 1913 and, after three months and four days, the party returned to Tanana on 20 June 1913.

Stuck writes well, interspersing keenly observed details of the journey with personal observations on the lack or unsuitability of much of the climbing equipment then available in North America compared with that available in Europe; the relative accuracy of the groups' scientific equipment; the debasement by commercial concerns of words such as "proposition", "product" and "scientist". Conversely, his slightly dated literary style includes such delightful descriptions as that of "hypsometrical equipment" (for measuring heights) and the opinion that "Contentment and satisfaction are great somnifacients".

In some respects the conquest of Denali is comparable with that of Everest; the long approach, the unpredictable weather, the danger from glaciers and crevasses, the previous unsuccessful attempts, the relatively unsuitable equipment of the time and the inclusion of local people in the expedition. Walter Harper, of mixed Scottish and Alaska Native descent, was first to reach the summit of Denali as Tenzing Norgay, of Nepalese Indian descent, was probably the first person to stand on the summit of Everest. Where it differs is the admitted amateurism of the climbers and the lack of a supporting organisation. For example, once Stuck and his party began their climb, their base camp was occupied only by a "fourteen or fifteen year old" Alaskan native whose responsibility it was to shoot game to feed the sled-dogs and who lived there alone for thirty one days despite having been told that the climbers would return in no more than two weeks.

Climbing Denali was the fulfilment of a Stuck's long term wish to see more of the country in which he worked and so much of which he had already seen by virtue of that work. "The Ascent of Denali" reveals as much about Stuck's regard for the country and its peoples as it does about his privately organised and financed expedition. Both aspects are intriguing and his book deserves a wider audience than that by which, currently, it is likely to be encountered. "The Ascent of Denali" is a worthy successor to Stuck's earlier book "Ten Thousand Miles with a Dog Sled", which is also well worth reading.

Bring a magnifying glass

This story is awesome and engaging. The print in this book requires an electron microscope to read. The font size matches the size of the font on a legal contract to by swampland. Just eyeballing it, the font would be size 3. Unreadable for most people on this account.

About the Author
I spent the first 12 years of my life growing up in Tokyo. Going through both international and local Japanese day-care and school systems, I was confused for a while how a Japanese kid could have red hair, or how a kid with red hair could be Japanese. After all my Japanese friends always told I was more Japanese than they were. I eventually moved away with the family, but I never stopped calling Japan my home. Junior year of high school was when I finally got the chance to take a six-week trip, during which I reacquainted myself once again with the mesmerizing country, its rich language and cryptic culture. Before long I was once again on a plane to Japan, this time it was to work for a Japanese IT-security firm as a sales engineer. The “salary-man” life is indeed stressful, but between working in an entirely Japanese office environment and making daily visits to Japanese clients to demonstrate IT products, I got closely acquainted with the Japanese business culture and etiquette. Not only that, I also picked up on all the secrets the shrewd businessmen and locals have for getting by in an expensive country while still enjoying everything it has to offer. My most recent trips to Japan were in 2009 and 2012, when I spent several months traveling to different parts of the country and writing my travel guide to Japan, “All-You-Can Japan.” I have since moved to the United States where I graduated with a B.A. from Princeton University and have been living and working in California for an educational startup company. I know Japan inside and out – as a resident, as a businessman, and as a traveler, though I must admit, I do have a sweet spot for Tokyo travel. Disappointing

I took a moment today to read the Kindle version of this book, which was purchased based on the recommendations of other "reviewers" (who I suspect are either friends of the author, or the author himself). The publication was not worth the $5 investment and 20 minutes of my life for the 70 pages of middle school-quality grammar and insipid commentary ("It's not that Japanese food is necessarily fattening, but the heavenly care and thought that goes into the food makes it more irresistible than chocolate to a pregnant woman").

The book's description advises that the author will "show you how to find cheap sushi that is to die for, and how to relax in the country's best hot-springs for a fraction of that price." Sadly, the author falls embarrassingly short of articulating his professed in-depth experiences of native know-how on food, transportation, and touristy must-sees. Based on the author's bio, it seems like a lot of potential gems were overlooked in favor of rather simplistic observations.

New travelers to Japan will be better served with the classic guide books from Lonely Planet, DK, Frommer's, etc. If you're looking to save money on your trip, then the purchase of this item is not the prudent place to start. Instead, go to your local library, run a quick internet search, and ask friends and co-workers for tips and recommendations.

I usually am very much in support of self-publishing authors just trying to get the word out on their work, but I wouldn't even recommend this author's work as a footnote to anyone's travel book collection. "His Japanese friends often say he's more Japanese than they are" - ??? Caveat emptor.

saved my trip

I was midway through my trip to Japan and could not get the hang of it. I thought, before going, that it would be like most countries i have been too. I figured, after 4-5 days i would master the basic survival skills and be on my way to a budget-smart and exciting trip. Boy, was i wrong. 2.5 weeks in i was still staying in way over my budget hostels, paying too much for my food (which i cooked) and paid too much to get from Tokyo to Koyoto. Luckily, a fellow traveller who just left gave me the book when he flew out.

I think it saved me roughly 30% per day expenditure. I wish i had the book from the get go... i could have traveller for another week or more!

I've wanted to travel to Japan for a long time now but I was just too worried, this book has given me the confidence I need to follow out my dream.
Before reading this book, I was worried that Japan would be too overwhelming and too expensive, this book literally makes it seem so easy, appealing and all in decent price (the trip, as well as the book itself).
I've read a number of travel guides (on Japan as well as other countries)... I always found them to be either a long list of details, in which I just got lost or something that seemed more like a story but didn't give me the practical advice I needed.
This book combines all the good qualities I look for in a travel guide - on the one hand, it's an easy-read (I can actually see Japan through the author's eyes, almost feeling I'm there with him) and on the other hand it gives you some practical sound advice that are bound to make your trip enjoyable and economical.
And last but not least.. like any tourist I'm looking for the hot-spots, the prime tourist locations.. don't worry they're all there but what this book gives you that others don't is the option of seeing (and tasting!!) the Japan as an every-day Japanese.. It doesn't stick to all the norms of traveling but rather gives you the option to vary your trip so that you can experience the real Japan.

Great info I wish I had years ago. The best timeshare book I've come across.

I never knew how much this book would help me until I got it. It's just packed with tons of information I wish I'd known over the years. I spent all this money, without even understanding in how many ways I was throwing away my options and my money. What was I doing? I admit it's kind of dry at times, but easy enough a read to make it through. And it certainly changed my outlook and use of my timeshares for me. In particular it already helped me figure out how to get the exchange to Hawaii I tried before. Thank you!

The owners guide is well written and gives the details of the advantages and disadvantages of Timeshare ownership. Finding trailheads and backroads were a breeze

I recently completed a two-month road trip, of which two weeks were spent in Montana. This atlas was a godsend, showing me forest roads that were not always noted on other maps. National forests, BLM lands, all were clearly shown in this atlas. I could open to whatever page I needed and find a campground, trail head or a forest to camp in. Special notes of interest were also annotated, showing Lewis and Clark sites, Indian encampments and other historical events.

The accuracy of this atlas is impressive. For the Bozeman area there is a special map that shows that area in great detail. The details are so clear that when I finally left Montana for Wyoming, I felt completely lost without my Benchmark map showing me the way. All my old Delorme gazetteers will be replaced with Benchmark maps.

Since I use both Benchmark and Delorme maps, I've realized from my road trip that for western states that have greater public lands, the Benchmark atlases serve a better purpose than the road atlas of Delorme.

If you like the outdoors, enjoy hiking, camping, cycling or kayaking or American history, or prefer the hidden back roads, this is the atlas for you. Scenic drives, bike trails, major trail heads and even waterfalls are noted here.

If you want to explore the backroads and find the best area's to go camping, without a lot of people next door, you need this book. It's nice to know that when you start into a remote area, whether you can expect to find quiet solitude around you, or a KOA campground...

Recreation Atlas

I had never seen a Recreation Atlas before this one. My family does a lot of camping out in the wilderness and we thought we'd try this one. It is very helpful because it not only shows the roads but has lists of campgrounds, recreation spots, and a lot more. It also has detailed section maps of the state so that you can get a close up look at an area. We horseback ride and this atlas even shows the trails that you can hike, bike, or horseback ride on! We were pleasantly surprised with this product.

Darwinism and the problem of evil

This book is part of a series on the Christian intelligential tradition. This one is on the natural sciences from a Christian tradition. It gives an overview of the people and events that gave rise to modern science and the naturalistic prospective. Professor Bloom (he has two earned PhDs, one from Cornell University) documents the fact that science was once the handmaiden to theology. The fact that theology was critical in many major science advancements is illustrated not only by Newton, but also Johannes Kepler and others. He then documents the rift of the so-called enlightenment and the reason why methodological naturalism is the wrong road to science progress because it prevents thinking outside of the box (p. 53). The sections on the problem of Darwinism and the problem of evil are excellent and well worth the price of the book alone.

Chapter 6 is a must read

This is an encouraging book for Christians and seekers who find secularized science to be winning the day. The fact is, "rationality has fallen on hard times." The more we learn about the world around us, the more marvelous and inexplicable it is. On every occasion when evolutionists deride the believer's "god of the gaps" you can be sure that they are papering over what is actually "evolution of the gaps": invoking evolution as the explanation of something that in fact these scientists can't explain. If the accusers are real scientists (i.e. they truly know the facts -- which excludes 90% of them) you can be sure they have searched long and hard—and failed to fill the gaps, because knowledgeable Christians are happy to accept the legitimate findings of science.

I was pleased to see my favorite hobbyhorse mentioned -- harking back to Newton's puzzlement about the stability of Earth's orbit (p. 74ff), knowing it is a many-body problem. Laplace's remark "I have no need of that hypothesis" was itself dead wrong: Laplace was himself deluded. Even today, nobody can predict the long-term stability of Earth's orbit, so, perhaps, it does indeed need God's occasional tweaking. The multitude of finely tuned parameters in physics (p.77ff) add to the matter. The vast machinery of indirect controls in living matter that—successfully—cope with a bewildering array of the "what if's" that constantly pummel life.I could go on, but you really need to read the whole chapter: it will be worth it.

The authors summarize (p.80) "the Enlightenment and rationalist movements began in the late seventeenth century because some people thought the universe looked too mechanical to have God influence it… Truth, we were told, could be established by human reason and experience alone." How wrong that is! We even have reached the limits of what logic and mathematics can do, and the results are very unsatisfying -- except that the true believers in secular science deny this.

So… get this book and read it. It will be worth the cost and effort

Not my favorite, but maybe good for some

I found this book to be rather outdated and not a fun read. I usually enjoy flipping though guidebooks, but this was not laid out in a manner that made it easy or fun. I'm sure there's some very valuable information contained within, but I wasn't willing to hunt it down especially after reading the list of outdated items you should pack.

I have lived in Memphis for a very long time and this book motivated me get off my butt and become better acquainted with my city! It is a sad realization that there are a number of non-mainstream jewels for which I had no idea. Often, the only things you hear about Memphis are negative. Samantha Crespo does an excellent job in shining a light on the positive!

Great ideas in here!

I've lived in the suburbs of LA my whole life, and there are so many great ideas in this book that I never would have thought of. Fun things, too. Not your typical standard touristy stuff, that would be too obvious. Carrie gives us the stuff that makes LA, well, LA! Full of places to eat, see, stalk, shop and way more, I am so excited to plan a few outings based on her recommendations. In addition, Carrie's style of writing is fun and easy to read. Like having a convo with your bestie about what you should do this weekend. This is a must read for those who live in the area as well as those who are planning a visit and want to get more out of Los Angeles than the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

This is a terrific book - even for a SoCal native like me. While I had done many of the suggestions in this book, there were a lot that I hadn't done yet.

The book has some terrific pictures and suggestions that will take you off the tourist track. The ideas are hip, fun, and specify whether things are family friendly or not. It also has a lot of ideas that I haven't seen in other guides to L.A.

Truly a book that can be used by any visitor to LA - and to those of us natives who would like to explore our own town.

Well written and fully deserving of five stars!

Love this Bible!

I was kind of skeptic to purchase because I read a comment that said that the letters are so small you can't even see them. I'm glad I did buy it because in reality, the letters are just fine! I can still read without my glasses and its pretty cool to have both the spanish and english versions in one page. This is a great buy and to tell you the truth, the bible itself is not as big and bulky as you would think for basically having two bibles in one! Highly recommend!

This seems like a great bargain for the price and it very well may be if you have VERY GOOD eye sight. The font is ridiculously samll and I was unable to see it well, even with my glasses. Had to return it : ( Even searched "LARGE PRINT" and this came up. Item description doesn't mention or show font size.
Esta puede ser una buena oferta pero espero que ud ve bien bien por que la letra es TAN CHICA que no se ve uno bien ni con lentes. La regrese a la compañia por eso.

A good choice

My husband and I are trying to become fluent in Spanish so we bought this Bible to take along with us to a Spanish speaking church we are attending. It's really nice that chapter by chapter there is English on one side and the Spanish translation on the other. We read it often trying to help with our language studies.

The Bible seems to be of good quality and the type size is not too small. We like it a lot.
