Don't Miss This One!

Mandarin Optional is a delightful romp through Thailand with two British lads as they busily seduce young Chinese female tourists. Specifically, it is about the adventures of Christian, a master pickup artist, and Darby, Christian's apprentice.
While the tale is about seduction, steamy sex details are left for the readers imagination. The story has to do with the psychology of convincing the ladies that it is in their best interest to follow the boys where ever they choose to go and, in the process, usually pay for the drinks along the way.
The book is quite a fun read, but it is more than just that. About 20% of the content is given over to a glossary, which, by itself, is an interesting and educational read. Two examples:
Tiao Ti (Chinese: 挑剔) – A Chinese adjective describing someone who is very fussy or picky.
Khlong (Thai: คลอง) - The general name for a canal in Thailand, but is not limited to artificial canals. Many smaller rivers are referred to as "khlong", followed by the name of the stream. Historically, the Thai capital Bangkok was criss-crossed by khlongs, which were used for transportation and for floating markets, but also for sewage disposal. Today, most of the khlongs of Bangkok have been filled in, although the Thonburi side of Bangkok (covering areas west of Chao Phraya River) still retains several of its larger khlongs.
Per the author, this is the first of a series of adventures by Christian and Darby. This book was most enjoyable and I am looking forward to the next one.

Funny, short but too detailed for my taste

An interesting, fast read of dating women on vacation from China. As Anglo men, knowledge of Chinese and a love for women, these guys attract women and describe in detail all of their movements thru late night disco, food and all activities. And that was some of the problems of the book. It becomes very mundane as he tries to weave their special talents for meeting women but do I need to now every minute of your day?
It has many enjoyable parts and probably will be more appealing to others younger than me or with particular interest in China and Thailand. But part of writing is presenting a compelling story concisely with great character build. This didn't build the characters as well as I would like and was too detailed. Still, it was enjoyable and I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading, just not one of my favorites. I really would prefer to give this a 3 1/2.

The game goes on vacation

I have been waiting for this book for such a long time. I do not share Neil Strauss's taste for big white chicks and mentally unstable strippers and so I am very pleased that somebody has taken it upon themselves to write a book that focuses instead on Asian beauties. I am not planning to visit Asia anytime soon but I will be trying out some of these techniques on my forthcoming visit to Europe where I hear that there are hordes of Chinese girls holidaying in Paris, Rome and Barcelona.
