Couldn't have traveled to Italy without it!
By SlingMommy
My family and I just returned from a dream two week vacation to Italy. Before we left my husband purchased this book, and it made our trip even more wonderful! In each city that we visited we knew we had safe, gluten-free options for our family. (Our youngest son has celiac disease, I an gluten-intolerant, and our oldest son stays gluten-free as well. Hubbie is the only wheat eater in the family.) Every restaurant mentioned in the book was perfect. We ate pizza, pasta, desserts, you name it and we ate it! It was a joy. Our son gets contaminated so often here in the US that we no longer eat out. Imagine my paranoia about taking him to the pasta capital of the world! I was terrified he would get sick. But, thanks to this book, we knew exactly where to take him. We ate out 2-3 meals a day for 14 days and he didn't get sick once. However, he did get contaminated on the plane on the way home! From his "gluten-free" meal no less! We are incredibly grateful to Maria Ann Roglieri for writing this guide. It made our once in a lifetime vacation buonissimo!!!

Go with AIC App instead
By doc4hd
The best I can say about this guide is that it has a nice introduction. However, the information is not organized well and tends to be outdated. Fortunately, Italy has an amazing system for finding gluten free food for those with Celiac disease through the Associazione Italiana Celiachia (AIC) http://www.celiachia.it. There is also an app for smartphones to find the nearest AIC certified pizzeria, restaurant, hotel or gelatoria near you. We left our copy of this book in a hotel behind since it was not useful and we relied on the app more than anything.

Rome Section Was Hard to Use
By SBL
I only went to one of the Roman restaurants mentioned in the book and that was one I had eaten at many times over the years. I found that in most restaurants all I had to do was explain to the waiter that I needed gluten free and they pointed out the array of rice and polenta options. No one had gluten free pasta although I was able to buy some at a stall in the Campo dei Fiori which I cooked at my rental apartment. I was eager to try some of the listed pizza places but simply didn't want to invest the time in searching every one of them out on the map. Divvying up the Rome section into neighborhoods would be helpful.

I tried one restaurant in Florence, not mentioned in the book,(Il Latini-via dei Palchetti 6) that was extraordinarily attentive. The were careful to create sauces that were GF and to point out any dishes in our family style meal that might be a problem. (The owner's daughter is celiac).

I was interested to find out about the discounts and coupons for people with celiac. Had I actually brought a letter from my doctor I could have enjoyed the discounts too.
