About the Author
Justin Chapman is an author, poet, actor, and journalist. At age nineteen he was elected to the Altadena Town Council. He has written for numerous publications and news websites, including Pasadena Weekly, LA Weekly, Daily Vision (Uganda), and Berkeley Political Review. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. He has traveled to thirty countries and writes a travel blog with his fiancée at junketjournalism.com. Saturnalia is his first book.

Journalistic eye with an intimate twist, let him bring you on this trip!

If you can't get on an airplane to South Africa, then the next best thing is to let the talented Justin Chapman take you on an exciting trip with his new book "Saturnalia". He honestly writes himself as a character who is facing personal struggles, yet uses travel as a healing medicine. While many youth may find themselves immobile in difficult situations, Justin finds his own restlessness and uses it to pursue life beyond himself. His story can inspire anyone stuck in a rut to get out and see the world, and hopefully grow from those experiences. By chaotically entering an unfamiliar world, he does brings order through his observations; a clear journalistic lens into a local culture most people don't see. His open & curious spirit took me on excitingly fresh terrain; I felt like a trusted travel companion as he disclosed intimate thoughts in a way only a true friend does. I couldn't escape while reading...nor would I want to! I highly recommend.

This book was a page turner - the subject matter was intense and sometimes even scary - Typically not my type of reading material but a family member suggested I read it, that I wouldn't be disappointed. Sure enough they were right - a few pages in and I was hooked.. This book was really about Justin finding the strength and courage to save himself. I have a hard time going to dinner or a movie by myself...imagine the kind of courage it takes to go to a country where there is so much strife, violence and crime.To go to a country that you know will not be safe and that you may not make it back home ... But Justin goes - because staying at home, where it's comfortable, where life is predictable is really a biggger threat to his life than going to a 3rd world country. Take the time to read this book about a young unhappy, listless American adult trying to find a purpose in his life - and along the way learning how to blend in on the scary roads of Africa and Uganda.

Fascinating Internal Journey

Much more than a travelogue -- though it is that, too -- Saturnalia is a fascinating internal journey for a young American finding himself and his purpose by traveling through the heart of Africa, using buses and trains and taxis and his feet, just the Africans around him do. My wife and I read it to each other and had an enjoyable three or four evenings doing it.

Sparkling writing from the Turkish Empire

This is a book to be treasured and I read it several times. It is hard to imagine the world Kinglake describes which is virtually extinct now at a time when lions abounded in Eastern Europe, Caliphs and Pashas smoked their pipes through long tubing and Lady Hester Stanhope gets esoteric.
Full of humour, the book is as British as they come with such sensitive nuances about the subject matter including disease, women, customs and issues of religion in the holy land.
I'm still looking for this brand of hero inside and out but don't think he's that common except as a carricature. Did Kinglake's world and attitude really exist?

Absolutely Charming. A picture of an admirable type of man, long since extinct: The aristocratic Englishman, who views everything with an ironic good humor, and complains about nothing, no matter how dangerous, or annoying,or trying. The writing itself is priceless, the subject matter interesting, but it is the man himself that makes the book.

Once asked how he learned to write so well, Winston Churchill growled, "Kinglake." That was Alexander Kinglake whose main works were this slim travelogue reporting on his tour as a young man through the Levant and a huge history of the Crimean war which occupied most of his life. Eothen is a wonderfully engaging tale of a traveler and the people he encounters in what was at the time a formidable journey. We are fortunate that it is back in print, bibliophiles treasure the early, leather-bound editions.

La lectura es buena pero tiene una cantidad enorme de errores gramaticales, falta de acentos que dificultan la lectura y diluyen la esencia de lo que se trata de leer. Si fue una traducción, por favor cambien a la persona que hizo el trabajo o tal vez contraten alguien que haga pruebas de lectura.!!!

Not book-worthy and waste of money

I was looking forward to enjoying Mr. Brotherstone's book. Unfortunately I am sorry to say that I found little to enjoy. Had this been a series of conversations after several beers, it probably could have been funny. But in a book? No. We're subjected in excruciating detail of all the gross things he subjected his students to - from snot to farts. Mr. Brotherstone is not a poor writer, he's just applied his talents to documenting all his embarrassing bodily misfunctions. In a bar at the end of another "one of those days", I'm sure I would be laughing, but in a book I unfortunately bought, I found nothing interesting, useful or funny.

Both funny and true

Carl, like Bill Bryson or Dave Barry, writes truth that is also hilariously funny. I too am an English teacher 'lifer' here in Japan (although I am not bald yet) and I feel like this book is about me. I have certainly been in many of the same situations.

The best thing about this book is that under the humour is a deep affection for Japan and the heart of an excellent teacher.

I have enjoyed Carl's blog for years, and now he's put it together into a book that is a better guide to being an English teacher in Japan than my own, and also much better written. I would dislike him if I hadn't enjoyed the book so much.

Loved every minute!

A must-read for anybody who has either lived in Japan as an English teacher, is currently living in Japan as an English teacher, or is planning to do so in the future. "Lifer" takes us on an honest and incredibly entertaining ride as a man who didn't necessarily plan to come to Japan, or own a small business here, but somehow ended up that way ... and is not at all unhappy about the way things turned out!

Newbies/wannabees to Japan will gain a lot of information about the way the ESL industry and public English education system works here, and veterans like me will smile, shake their heads nostalgically and think "yep, those were the days!"

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Five stars.

Or to give its Māori name, Aotearoa, the Land of the Long White Cloud. Orcland to the Ottomans is the first volume in this travel adventure.

About the Author
I live to travel. It is in my blood. It is when I am at my happiest and most exuberant. In my twenties it was Europe by InterRail, in my thirties it was the odd package tour, but in my forties I finally broke free from my humdrum bourgeois existence and headed to Africa. Five months in trucks, buses, coaches, pick-ups and God knows what else, over-landing across ten countries from Nairobi to Cape Town. But I also have a passion for the natural world. My idea of heaven would be somewhere in the rainforest, home to over half the earth’s plant and animal species. I’ve worked in an animal sanctuary, a garden centre and plant nursery, and been involved in Green politics, environmental charities and campaigning. So I suppose you could say travel, trees and the environment are my bag. South-East Asia was next on the list with a slight diversion to Australia and New Zealand. Nine countries this time over two years, unfortunately interrupted by falling off a mountain in Australia and breaking my ankle. As soon as I was fit and well, off I went again. Never once was I homesick; if I grew tired of one place, one city or one country I could always move on - and move on I did, following the sun. But all good things come to an end, and back home I came to write up my first published book ‘Backpacking With A Bunion’. Since then I have done extensive travelling in other parts of Asia and the Americas. My current project is Terry’s Travels about the rest of the world and the first volume is entitled Orcland to the Ottomans, a journey from New Zealand to Turkey.

Great travel read!

As a lover of books and travel myself, I appreciate a well-written travel book. Terry Grigg offers enough description to paint a picture without dragging on. His observations are eye opening and reflective. You may not agree with all of his insight, but you will look at the world differently having read them. His outlook aside, Terry gives a brief history on each location to help shape the reader’s understanding of a place and its people. This is a great book to pick up and read a chapter at a time. I look forward to reading more from this author.

A pleasant read about Banff and running a small B & B.....

I didn't expect to find this book that interesting but was pleasantly surprised to discover it was not only very readable but actually, for the most part, very entertaining. As an armchair traveler I have read a lot of books of this ilk and this one does stand up to competition with the big name writers who make the top ten lists. If you enjoy travel books, books about the Canadian Rockies and nature material I think you'll find this a pleasing read.

A GREAT book that will make you feel as though you are sitting in the quaint little B&B yourself, listening to Jamie tell his stories. His vivid descriptions of Banff coupled with the interesting history of the town and B&B will surely captivate you ... I finished it in two days because I simply couldn't put it down. For younger audiences in particular, McVicar will inspire your adventurous side, lending fantastic advice to "take the money you are about to spend on a Masters or Doctorate degree and travel. Shrink your world. It just might widen your sense of home."

A delightfully entertaining and informative story about a Canadian woman and an American man set in the resort town of Banff.

This is a beautifully written love story about the trials and tribulations of running a B and B in the small mountain town of Banff located in the Canadian Rockies. Jamie's talent lies in his ability to tell a story with humour, insight and passion. The story is interspersed with fascinating,factual information about the geological and natural history of Banff and area. This story is captivating from beginning to end and is guaranteed to draw you to visit Banff if you haven't already done so (and perhaps check into a B and B). I highly recommend this sweet read.

Pleasantly Surprised

The Good:
-Inexpensive, only $3.75 each when using Amazon's 4-for-3 promotion.
-Excellent maps
-The Drama of the Bible in Six Acts introduction is really quite awesome, great for a new Bible reader.
-*****The biggest sell point for me - there are short introductions for some of the chapters, but they are careful to give historical data without sweeping theological claims. For example, in the introduction to Revelation, it does not comment on the theology of Revelation, only the structure. I was concerned that there would be some sort of end-times theology or rapture theology. It is missing it completely, which is awesome. The church can teach the particular theologies without worrying about contradictions within the bibles they're offering.*****

The Neutral:
-The cover is very lightweight. I ordered one book, but I'm still planning on ordering around 40-52 more.

The Bad:
-? I have not yet observed anything that I am upset about. These are good Bibles.

Great Inexpensive Bible BUT it's not even close to LARGE PRINT

THE BIBLE IS GREAT; AND YOU CAN'T BEAT THE PRICE FOR A NIV BIBLE; HOWEVER, IT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO LARGE PRINT. IT IS VERY "DISPOSABLE" WITH CHEAP STOCK AND A VERY FLIMSY COVER BUT ITS CONTENT IS SPECTACULAR;) NOT MEANING TO BE CRITICAL BUT IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T BUY IT EXPECTING A LARGE PRINT BIBLE.

think again if you think you are getting larger print

The print in this bible is just normal size so it you are buying it because it says larger print think again you will not be happy with it.
The bible is great print to small.

Good info, but way too personal in opinions.

I did find this book incredibly helpful and full of information. What I didn't like is that the author has a lot of his opinions on different companies, and individuals in Merida and I think those should be kept to himself, as they are opinions. There seem to be a lot of put-downs on certain expats living in Merida that I believe are too personal to be in an essential guide to Merida. There was a lot of good information, but due to the personal digs on a few people, and places, and even vacation rental homes etc., I'm not thinking this is a good book overall. For instance, I did partake in a day long cooking course and it was amazing, fun, the house was incredible - we all loved it, the food was great, cookbook that we all loved, and yet the author puts down the course instructor because he calls himself a chef. In my opinion.....he is a chef. Who cares if the author doesn't think he deserves that title? Many others think he does. THere were also put downs on a few volunteer organizations and he is clear on who and which ones he does and doesn't like. He may be right on some shady business going on, but if others are enjoying using the facilities, and the shadiness is over, then I'm not sure what his problem is. This organization is not for me, but maybe others DO enjoy it. He's wrecking my ride on this one. So, thus......3 stars.

Excellent descriptions of the area, history, and cultural norms, and candid opinions about issues that affect expatriates

This book is really an essential guide to Merida. We are anticipating moving to Merida in the next year or so and doing a lot of research on the city. We really appreciated the personal views the authors display which gives more than a litany of facts. The opinions are noted as such, and the reader is left to further explore any issues that may affect them. It is refreshing to get such views of institutions and people - both positive and negative. The negative comments are documented and considered a head's up..

The information ranges from excellent descriptions of the area, history, and cultural norms, and then expands into the social and legal issues affecting expatriates, including official information and contact information for further exploration.

While very positive about living in Merida, the caution that Merida is not paradise - it is hot and has mosquitoes - will need to be considered in making our decision. (We lived in Key West for years, so we know we can deal with the heat - but we will need to experience the mosquito issue.

While the information is the most timely we have seen, we ordered the 2016 version for any updates.

Don't spend your money!

This book is filed with really bad information and non-facts about people, companies, and non-profit organizations in Mérida. In fact one of the authors, Louis Nevaer who writes under the alias Rob Brenner, was found guilty of publishing false statements in June 2015 by a US District Court for exactly the kinds of false statements this book is filled with (google his name). Do not spend your money on this book.
