Katina Daanen is a 2011 NFCT Through-Paddler and in the process of repaddling the Trail as a Section-Paddler. She is a freelance art director and website designer living in Wisconsin. When not paddling or writing guidebooks, she spends her free time in the northern Wisconsin log cabin and cordwood sauna she built with her family.

Companion Guidebook for the distance traveler

There are a number of questions which arise when planning a longer trip that do not apply to the day or weekend paddler. Questions about logistics, re-supply, river related obstacles, what gear really works and more. Katina, a successful thru-paddler of the 700+ mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail herself, shares this key information with the reader. As a relatively new trail, not many have completed the entire trail, so even with blogs and the support of the ever-helpful office staff in Waitsfield, VT there have been, until now, many unanswered questions. With the support and advice of many, Katina has been able to produce the first edition of the Through-Paddler's Companion. For those planning a longer trip, this book provides invaluable information. Thanks to all who helped, and especially to Katina for writing and producing it!

Exactly What I Needed and More Than I'd Hoped For

I've been planning a NFCT through paddle for 4 years and will begin my trip in June. The NFCT produces a great guide and map set, but they are written in the assumption that all paddlers travel downstream. As through paddlers travel many miles upstream these directions are also confusing.

This book breaks the route into segments that, with detailed descriptions, allowed me to really begin to unsolder stand my challenges and to estimate how much water I might cover each day.

I could go on....just know that if you plan a through paddle that you must have a copy of this book. I feel so much more confident than I did with just the NFCT maps and guidebook.

or make good decisions while you are on the trail

Whether you are thinking of taking on this trail as a through-paddler or a section paddler, all I can say is, don't go without this book. My son and I paddled the trail in 2016 and came to refer to this book affectionately as 'the bible'. It is as essential as a paddle. We had the entire NFCT map set as well, but the maps do not offer any of the narrative necessary to be able to plan as you prepare, or make good decisions while you are on the trail. All that comes from this book. Happy paddling!

Good travel guide

I have always wanted to go and visit Canada and this guide helped me define and finish my Canadian travel schedule. Now I will consider going to places like the Polar Bears of Churchill and a couple others that I didn't know before.

I like the mix of the book as it covers the best shops, restaurants, cities and main tourist spots. This is a good travel guide if you are looking for a pocket guide that goes straight to the point and shares the best of what Canada has to offer.

Excellent for Prison Ministry

I have been using this Bible in prison ministry for 5 years. I wanted to add a few more copies, as some of the inmates take a copy when they leave. I figured the Amazon price with my Prime free shipping would be equivalent to my other source. Imagine my surprise when I found different page numbers and some words from the older Bibles!

Providentially, Church Source then offered free shipping with their lower price. I ordered 20 from them and replaced all the older versions. My population does not need more confusion.

This version gets 5 stars because the NIrV is easy to read. The women I work with have been found incompetent to stand trial and are receiving mental health treatment. Most respond to the treatment and go on to face their charges and lives. My goals are to encourage them that God has not forgotten them. I present the Bible as inspired by God and our source to know Him. There are inserts that speak to being in prison, but I don't teach from those, trusting them to be discovered by the women on their own. I sometimes use the maps and timeline of Biblical history.

Most of my personal study is from the NKJV with John MacArthur's notes.

I have one hour for my "Church Group". The multipurpose classroom has a TV and DVD player. I show a half hour Day of Discovery video, usually set in Israel. Then, we read Scripture that has been referenced.

I think anyone involved in prison ministry will find this Bible useful and non-threatening. The title '"Free on the Inside" encourages those who are not free to leave the building.

Good outreach to inmates

Don't care for the NIrV translation...much prefer the 1984 NIV translation. But this Bible does have good notes, testimonies, etc. to help people who are in prison become free from sin and evil through the power of Jesus Christ.

I bought this for a friend who landed in jail. A lot of the scenarios in the Bible are way beyond him but I figured he could maybe use it to witness to other men. I think it's great!

Went to the Outer Banks recently, and bought this book and took it with us. The book turned out to be indispensable for our three-family vacation...from fishing to creating stain-glass mosaics, this guide has a description of it all!

What a travel guide should be

This book is fantastic! It gives a very detailed description about everything you'd need for a wonderful trip to the Outer Banks.

I especially like the way it's laid out, with each section going "north to south". For example, the restaurants section starts at the north end of the islands and works its way down to the very south. Same with accommodations, etc.

It also definitely gives you a "feel" for the place - telling the type of vibe each community has and what the general demographics are.

Great Book for Vacationing in the Outer Banks

When I bought this book I was not sure if it would really be helpfully for us and our first trip to the Outer Banks. It was great! We used it everyday. Before we went somewhere we looked at it as reference. It helped us eat everyday in the Outer Banks plus do a little shopping. I am glad I bought it now, it helped us have one of the best vacations we ever had. I can't wait for the next edition because I think we are going back again and again to the Outer Banks and a updated version will help us prepare for any changes since our last visit.

This book, 30 Days in Thailand was the only book I read cover to cover in one sitting. I highly recommend this book if you are planning a trip to Thailand. We only have 14 days, but I was easily able to fashion the perfect trip for us using the suggestions, practical advice and recommendations put forth in this book. I found the information at the back of the book extremely helpful as well. The other books? I kept trying to read them but it never happened.

The first part of this book, based mostly on the author's eleven-year commute between Orlando, Florida and Rochester, Minnesota provides real life anecdotes meant to make the reader smile and laugh. Part two deals with customer service and common sense, or lack thereof, that we all experience on an everyday basis. Reflections of a Travelin' Man is intended to be a fun read for the seasoned traveler, as well as the "infrequent" flyer.

Enjoyed the Trip

This is a fun romp through the world of travel. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a newbie you'll find some pearls of wisdom here. Almost everyone will find that they too have been confronted with similar situations and fumbled our way through them thinking the same thoughts. There is an old saying that "experience is the best teacher" and Gary has a fun way of teaching us his hard learned lessons. Get a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and enjoy the read.

The tales in this book are so true. I had "laughing tears" as I read some of the stories. The author provides great advice on airline and hotel reward programs as well as how to quickly navigate through an airport and security. This book provides great advice and funny travel situations!
