My wife and I spend a few nights each year in various National Park lodges and this is exactly the kind of companion that we were looking for. While it isn't perfect (it could use more pictures of both the lodges and rooms), it contains a lot of great information. We are traveling to both Glacier and Yellowstone this summer and this contains lots of the information that we are looking for.

This book is so helpful when planning any National Park trip! I actually read a review on Trip Advisor that recommended this book. I am so glad I bought it because I had no idea that there were so many lodges! I would have missed out for sure on our upcoming adventures!

Jesse Duplantis does a great job of explaining how to use faith to receive from God.

Oh my Jesus, this book really touched my heart. I was going through a trial and I bought this book and bargain to read it. It changed my whole outlook of faith. It taught me to totally trust in Jesus. You will be so blessed and so encouraged by this book. It is truly straight from the Holy Spirit. This book gives you a true understanding what faith is. Be encouraged in your faith. Buy this book and you will be blessed.

I love this woman. I usually give four stars but this guidebook is superb and is written by just one woman. It describes things that you don't get in Lonely Planet or Rough Guide-Especially an entire word and phrase section which covers the gamut of what I wanted to know how to say-AWESOME! She also includes easy maps-not those confusing city maps containing things you would never need but maps easy to read with laundry services! I love her! This guide gives a detailed history of the country and its diverse inhabitants and it describes in detail eco-tourism, budget options, staying with families with links to websites, off the beaten path destinations in cool mountainous regions which is exactly what I was looking for and city sights and night life. Thank You for this book!

We had our tea, and at 5 pm got into the trap. We drove along Tanglin Road, into Stephens Road, and along Bukit Timah Road to the junction of Cluny Road, and there we dismissed the syce. We thought it a curious fact that no-one was playing tennis…and there was not a soul to be seen on the garrison golf course… You can imagine our horror when we found that the 5th Light Infantry had broken out in open mutiny and had been in Tanglin that afternoon, and were even then supposed to be marching on Singapore!’

So begins this enthralling husband-and-wife account of an unexpected and terrifying episode in Singapore’s history that saw 850 Indian soldiers revolt and slaughter 47 British and local soldiers and civilians. Never before transcribed, this memoir is published for the first time, 100 years after the events took place.

What did you do in the War, Daddy? Well, there wasn’t too much of a First World War in Singapore compared to the Second, but one family’s memories – Daddy’s & Mummy’s - have just been published by Monsoon Books to mark the centenary of the Singapore Mutiny.

Barbara Brown was just three in February 1915, old enough to be aware of anxiety amongst adults around her, and of hasty journeys to board a ship in Singapore Roads which then went nowhere. Her parents, Edwin (EAB) and Mary (MEB) had the foresight to write an account of those times for her, and EAB describes in an accompanying letter how he is finishing transcribing their notes whilst sitting in the deck house of a cargo ship returning home nearly 10 years later.

As a then-Captain in the Singapore Volunteers it fell to EAB to play an important part in the quelling of this Mutiny. He describes events in a compelling way, to the point, and with some hints of humour in what were clearly worrying times. Whereas his story is one of almost continuous military activity, that of his wife Mary is of days of boredom punctuated by periods of excitement. Both give homely details of colleagues and friends, and of their reactions to the unfolding drama.

In one of 3 forewords to this first publication, Barbara’s daughter Celia Ferguson tells the extraordinary later history of this handwritten account, of its presumed loss after the Fall of Singapore and subsequent re-appearance. She also usefully places this event in the history of the Brown family in Singapore in the first half of the 20th Century, a history sadly far more marred by the Second World War. In particular, Mary, a refugee afloat in 1915, was again aboard ship, the ill-fated Vyner Brooke, in 1942, and died in Muntok in January 1945.

While both the Browns’ accounts are basically restricted to their own memories of the events, the other two forewords, by Prof Brian P Farley and Nigel Barley, provide much useful military and political background to this story and its aftermath. Full marks must go to the publisher Phil Tatham for gathering all this information into one most readable volume.

EAB later published Indiscreet Memories, memoirs of his first five years in Singapore, which was republished by Monsoon Books in 2007. In his foreword to that volume he fears that ‘it will be of interest to no one but my own immediate relations’. He need not have feared, for now the true value of such accounts in painting a full picture of life beside the formal histories is being appreciated by a wide audience.

God desires your intimate fellowship

What if you were told the very God of the universe requests the pleasure of your company?

God is seeking those who have a heart for Him. Sheets explores what that means. It takes time and effort. It must be a priority. He uses the story of Mary and Martha to distinguish the pleasure of His company and the pressure of His company. He explains waiting on God, writes about creating a place to meet with God, explores what it means to walk with God, explains what friendship means, undistracted devotion, and how knowing God leads to knowing ourselves, to restoration and revelation.

Sheets tells a bit of his own story. His father was an evangelist and sheets was born again at a young age. But, he writes, “Being a born-again Christian doesn't equate to knowing God in a personal way.” (236) He knew who God was, he just did not know how to connect with God in a personal way and at any real depth. When things got tough he realized this faith did not sustain him. Using Jacob as an example, Sheets encourages us to seek a face-to-face relationship with our Father.

Sheets shares much needed insight into developing a personal relationship with the God Who created us. He explains that our hearts were created by God for the purpose of knowing and enjoying Him. Reading this book will help you fulfill your heart's desire. I highly recommend it.

"The Pleasure Of His Company" by Dutch Sheets is a good read for anyone either wanting to learn more about spending time alone with the Lord or needing encouragement to continue walking with Him.

The book is around 260 pages, may be read either as a devotion or regular book, and covers point such as:

1. Enoch enjoyed a close walk with the Lord - the Lord also wants us to enjoy our relationship with Him.
2. It takes time and discipline to be quiet before the Lord so we can hear from Him - it's hard to hear when we are impatient or constantly on the go.
3. God genuinely enjoys us being in His presence.
4. Dealing with distractions that keep us from focusing our attention on God.
5. Making time with God the priority in your life.

Do you know people who are close to God, they remain calm and secure no matter what seems to be going on in their life. Want to have a more rewarding spiritual life? Dutch Sheets offers a way to help through information in this book. The book is written in an easy to understand way and has great examples to help in obtaining a closer walk with God. We need to treat God as a Holy God but also as a friend and not as someone, we only ask for what we want or only invite into our lives occasionally. Dutch gives many interesting stories in his book. He wrote his book in short chapters for fast and easy reading and can be used as a devotional. He ends each chapter with a prayer. I am sure you will enjoy this book and may want to read it multiple times.
Treat God as you would a best friend and invite Him to share in your life.

Ben Box has been working on the South American Handbook for over 30 years and is a Latin America expert. Ben has contributed to newspapers, magazines and learned tomes, usually on the subject of travel, and has also been involved in Footprint’s Central America & Mexico, Caribbean Islands, Brazil and Peru since their inception. Having a doctorate in Spanish and Portuguese studies from London University, Ben maintains a strong interest in Latin American literature and culture.

Comprehensive, updated guide, minus the historical and cultural contexts

The only thing that recommends this edition above previous editions is the fact that the listings and some of the narrative sections are updated. Otherwise, I'd have to say that the 89th edition (2013) is still the best.

For this edition, the chapters of historical and cultural contexts have been removed entirely, replaced by a vague reference to online material. Coverage is still good, and is generally comprehensive. There aren't going to be many places on this vast continent that this guide doesn't cover. As you might expect, the major tourist draws get the most attention, so this is not really an "off the beaten track" guide. The recommended itineraries in the front are well designed, provided you have at least a month to dedicate to your travel. Actually, the guide frequently mentions the fact that a real comprehensive tour of the continent is going to take a long, long time. Three months, minimum. This is a guide that can be easily used for a focussed tour, though it is really designed for a long-term journey.

Footprint and author Ben Box have been at this for a long time, so they have this guide down to a well-designed handbook to the continent. There's nothing really comparable out there. The major destinations - Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Cartagena, Cusco, Salvador - are right up to date and well documented. There are nice guides to the frequently overlooked countries, and the coverage of Bolivia is particularly good. The guide includes good coverage of important natural attractions as well. It's only when you escape into the provinces and the true hinterlands that you'll find this guide leaves you behind.

Maps are very, very basic but are accurate.

One thing I have noticed with Footprint guides lately is that they frequently come damaged. Bent pages, creased spines, bent covers, water damage, mis-cut pages. These are not things that happen during shipping, but happen at the printer. Footprint needs to seriously look at quality control.

It's still worth using a printed guidebook if it's this good.

The purpose of travel guidebooks has changed over the years as the internet has replaced printed materials for timely logistical information. The Footprint guide does a decent job of this, but a printed book can never compete with the internet for timeliness. Where this book excels is in providing ideas and context for exploring that you might not know to look up. The Footprint South American Handbook has always been the best guidebook for recommending activities and side trips that enriches travel. The editorial content is helpful and in good taste. This is my favorite guidebook for any destination in the world.

Best single volume guide

Since this is not currently available as a Kindle ebook, I borrowed the print version from the library. The print version is very expensive ($40 US) for the hardback.

We are going on a round South America cruise in 2016 and I am going to buy this. I only want to take one print travel guide.

There are no pretty pictures but 1664 pages of fine print, with scores of small monochrome adverts.

I already own 2 other South America guidebooks but they are markedly inferior to this one.

This book covers all the continental countries including Guyana, Surinam, and French Guinea plus the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctica.

When this becomes available again, download the sample so you can see how detailed the information is.

Kingsley's complicated and indomitable character shines through in each sentence, as she describes hacking, marching, and climbing her way through the continent. After more than a century, she remains a feminist icon and a most remarkable woman.

About the Author
Mary H. Kingsley (1862 – 1900) was an English ethnographic and scientific writer and explorer whose travels throughout West Africa and resulting work helped shape European perceptions of African cultures and British imperialism. Mary Kingsley upset the Church of England when she criticised missionaries for attempting to convert the people of Africa and corrupt their religion. In this regard, she discussed many aspects of African life that were shocking to English people, including polygamy, which, she argued was practiced out of necessity. During the Second Boer War, Kingsley travelled to Cape Town and volunteered as a nurse. She was stationed at Simon's Town hospital, where she treated Boer prisoners of war. After contributing her services to the ill for about two months, she developed symptoms of typhoid and died on 3 June 1900. In accordance with her wishes, she was buried at sea.

Tales of the Dark Continent When Travel Was Not For the Faint of Heart

Mary H. Kingsley, British writer and explorer, 1862-1900, was born in London, the daughter of a medical doctor. After both parents died in 1892, she suddenly found herself at odds over what to do with her life, as heretofore she had lived mainly in service to her sick mother and to her father as a research assistant. In August of 1893, unmarried and alone, she traveled to West Africa at the age of 30 to gather fish specimens for the British Museum and to study fetish in order to complete her father's research on primitive religion. In her time, that created quite a stir.

Travels in West Africa, the first book recounting her adventures, was first published in 1895 and became a best seller. It is as engaging a travelogue in the 21st century as it was then. Kingsley's finely detailed descriptions of the people and the terrain bring to life the harsh and frequently fatal conditions of West Africa at the time with seemingly effortless skill, as if she is telling the tales of her exploits to an old friend by the fireside. The writing is liberally infused with humor, which lovers of dry British wit will find appealing. Her affection for West Africa, despite the dangers and difficulties, will be puzzling only to those who have never traveled there. It's a captivating read. I wish her other two books were also available on Kindle.

Kingsley died on her third trip to the African continent on June 3, 1900, of enteric fever at the age of 37 while working as a volunteer for the medical services at Simon's Town, South Africa, during the Boer War.

Adventure, Travel and a Memoir

I didn't expect much from this book, and simply downloaded it to my Kindle because it was a)free and b)looked like a passably interesting travel memoir.

Lucky for me, this actually turned out to be a fascinating read. The author -- a very likable and well traveled Englishwoman exploring in the 1890's -- does a fine job of bringing her audience in to West Africa of the late 19th century. Readers will be entertained while learning a great deal about the landscape, people and wildlife of Africa at the time. The true life stories of the author are entertaining and often humorous. Of course, some of the observations are colored from a somewhat Victorian standpoint, which can admittedly be grating for the more enlightened modern reader. Some of the descriptions of the landscape can be a little long winded, and at times the prose is a little stilted.

Over all, an excellent read. Beautifully entertaining and enlightening, and a wonderful glimpse in to the past.

Essential reading for historians of Africa..

Mary Kingsley was certainly a brave, brave woman and a good Victorian writer. The first part of her book about her various travels in West Africa, Fernando Po, Cameroon and Gabon makes excellent reading. She then discusses the cults and religions in West Africa and has many useful insights into trade and development. Some of her thoughts are shocking to a modern day audience but she was nevertheless way ahead of her contemporaries in her understanding about West Africa. The book revives towards the end with her notes on her trip to Mount Cameroon - a really excellent achievement for an independent traveler at that time. I can recommend this book to any serious historian of this area and period.

Cloud Nine and Roger Swanson, Captured in Christmas Letters and Photos

As the nearest local sailing magazine, Northern Breezes, which I published I always looked forward to the quality of Roger's Christmas letters which were well researched and presented with the quiet humility which was Roger Swanson. Roger introduced hundreds of otherwise landlocked sailors and wanna be sailors to the incredible adventures of sailing not only around the world but also to Antarctica, Greenland, the north pole and of course the Northwest Passage. Roger was the first American sailor to go through the Northwest Passage from east to west. It didn't come easy, this was his third attempt. A sister boat made it through the passage and was subsequently lost in the Bering Sea enroute on the last leg to Alaska. Roger Swanson demonstrated the best in seamanship and camaraderie to fellow sailors. Non-sailors will appreciate this read even if you've never sailed, for the adventures! Sailors will appreciate this book on several levels including the tough choices, the well being of crew and the evident seamanship brought to you in a non-technical, yet professional manner. Enjoy!

I served with Roger in the Navy and received each of his Christmas letters but to have all 30 years of letters in a single compendium is fabulous! Collectively they reveal Roger as a world-class explorer and adventurer, using his 57' fiber-glass hull sailboat to conquer the world and, in the process, provide the reader with so much interesting history of parts of the world to which he travelled. Three circumnavigations, two nail-biting voyages to Antarctica, three exciting attempts at the Northwest passage, eventually conquering it and making a world record, make for exciting and very informative reading. I sailed briefly with Roger and this book makes me feel as though I am right there with him in each voyage.

A memorable book that chronicles the life of a remarkable individual. A voyager historian that spent a good portion of his remarkable life sailing the seven seas.
