About the Author
Beth Haslam was brought up on a shooting estate in Wales. Deep in the countryside, her childhood was spent either on horseback, helping the gamekeepers raise pheasants, or out sailing. After a serious car crash in 1991, Beth she set up her own consultancy business. As semi-retirement beckoned, Beth and her husband, Jack, decided to buy a second home in France. This became a life-changing event where computers and mobile phones swapped places with understanding the foibles of the French, and tackling the language. Beth is now occupied as never before. Raising and saving animals, writing, and embracing everything that rural France has to offer; she’s loving it!

A Comedy of Real Estate Debacles...Part One...

If the concept of a sophisticated British couple traveling France by automobile with their two dogs, questing for the hunting estate of their dreams isn't a premise enough, add in the real estate agent caricatures, and the shocking "estates" purported as "ideal", and you begin to wonder if the dream and the twain shall ever meet. Then there are the dogs to deal with, the car, and their various shelters along the way, respites in the mayhem. Best laid plans. All the research in the world of estate shopping, and then, of course, there's reality. Therein lies the story.
Haslam's storytelling charm is compelling, and it is easy to visualize the colorful characters and situations. Will they eventually choose the remote place on the mountainside, the one where you can easily dangle off the switchback path, aka, driveway? Or be seduced by the work to be done on the fixer-upper? Her poor husband, the practical sort, barely contains himself dealing with the agents and their interpretation of his very specific needs, while Beth, brightly optimistic, knows they will find it, surely it'll be the next one!
It was rollicking, and teeters on farcical. Was the ghost of Peter Sellers photo-bombing this adventure?
