The Dictator's Highway

Having travelled part of the Chilean Carretera Austral with my family in 1990, I was interested to read an account of a journey along the same route take by another some 20 or more years later.
Whereas my family and I had travelled the road in the comfort of a double cabin pickup with a roofed loadspace, Justin Walker chose to fly to Villa O’Higgins, at the southern end of the highway and walk north, the one element of restrictive time being imposed by the date and time of his return flight from Puerto Montt to Santiago.
The construction of the highway (the term is somewhat grandiose for a 770 mile long largely gravel-surfaced road) was begun in 1976, during the Pinochet government, hence its official name Carretera Longitudinal General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, in order to provide a route of road transport to the far south of Chile without passing through Argentina. It subsequently became a somewhat unlikely tourist route, much favoured by backpackers and other devotees of more extreme tourism, among whom is numbered our intrepid author.
Justin Walker’s account is a merry blend of fact: historical, geographical, scientific and linguistic, travel writing and anecdote. His accounts of meetings with many people along the way, both local and tourists like himself, are chock full of finely observed and humorously accounted detail, and the more hair-raising of his exploits, such as his rafting of the river Futaleufu and his unaccompanied ascent of Cerro Castillo, one of the more forbidding massifs in the region, cause the reader to wonder whether to admire his courage or question his sanity.
This is an account, which will enthral the reader who does not know the region and awaken many memories in the one who does.

Enjoyable and entertaining read

The Dictator's Highway is a long and remote road through Chile's southerly Patagonian regions called the Carretera Austral. This book is a terrific insight into a six-week expedition of geograpohical and self-exploration.Tthe descriptions of he countryside and its people are arresting and the characters stay in the mind: the elderly, wise gaucho Don Vincente tending his animals high up on a mountain, the massively-built Pablo cutting logs for a living, Maurico running an ecotourism camp; these and many others came alive in my imagination. The stories of everyday Patagonian people blend well with the details of the landscape and the local history, making a delightful read. The author's engaging style includes many memorable turns of phrase, making for an intimacy with the reader. You don't have to be an addiict of travlogues to enjoy this book, but if you are you will love it!

Great writing style. Having lived in Chile for 2 yrs from 2008-2010, I could really feel the country, language and culture come alive on those pages! Absolutely loved it.
