Running on Empty: On an Epic 12,000-Mile Road Trip, America Has Its Say on Economic Inequality, by Peter H. Michael

In his vivid descriptive style, prize-winning author Peter H. Michael recounts his classic 12,000-mile road trip taking in the expansive variety of people and places of the United States. Michael set out not to fathom the country "in search of America" as Steinbeck, Kerouac and Least Heat-Moon had but to listen and let America tell him whatever it might. Tell it did. Ranch hands, cave guides, linemen, nurses, executives, teachers, trailer park pensioners, a decathlete, couples with upside-down mortgages, the poorest county, the wealthiest county, and all races each sing verses of the same song: economic disparity.

Review
Michael's observations on what is driving middle Americans to the margins are both acute and important. In Running on Empty, he explores a disquieted America as if it were a foreign country that he was seeing for the first time. Unflaggingly curious, gregarious, and good humored, he guides us through a human panorama, from Native Americans and high plains Tea Partyers, to "road angels," spunky RVers, and a middle class that Michael finds increasingly apprehensive in an era of deepening economic insecurity.

Prize-winning and Pulitzer Prize-nominated historian Fergus Bordewich

Michael's book distills exhilaration of the open road, the vastness of the country, and the desire to see America in its best and most bountiful manifestation. A politically minded road book with a generous heart, Running on Empty is a charming blend of Whitman's maximalism, Kerouac's enthusiasm and Least Heat-Moon's earthy anthropology. He finds an original voice in observing what he sees as the great American problem of the 21st century: the daunting wealth gap.

Kirkus Reviews

I could not put the book down. Michael listens to Americans better than anyone since Whitman, Steinbeck, or Moyers and explains brilliantly what he hears. Running on Empty is a monumentally significant work appearing at the perfect time, as clear a delineation of income disparity as I have seen anywhere.

Literary critic Ronald Primeau

From the Inside Flap
In his vivid descriptive style, prize-winning writer Peter Michael tells of his classic 12,000-mile road trip taking in the expansive variety of people and places of the United States. Michael sets out not to fathom the country "in search of America" as had Steinbeck, Kerouac and Least Heat-Moon but to listen and let America tell him whatever it might.

And tell it did.

Ranch hands, cave guides, linemen, nurses, executives, teachers, trailer park pensioners, a decathlete, couples with upside-down mortgages, the poorest county, the wealthiest county, whites, blacks, Indians, Hispanics and Asians all sing verses of the same song: widening economic disparity.

Michael listens to Americans finally awakening to the income and wealth gaps which over the past generation have eroded the middle class and hit the poor hardest of all. Using his economics and demography expertise in clear punchy style, he demolishes plutocrat arguments in an eminently readable exposé on economic inequality and how the rich and corporations purchase it through the protection money called campaign contributions.

Along the long American road, those met gently speak their minds as the author and his wife are feted by uniquely American vignettes, personal stories, yesteryear small towns and local history while the continent's majestic geography unfolds each day--a mysterious desert amidst Great Plains grasslands, the middle of Lake Michigan, Yellowstone splendor, hushed redwood groves, languid riverside campsites, red rock Great Basin vistas, the High Sierra, desert ghost towns, an inland delta, the longest cave, Lincoln's chair, Faulkner's study and much more.

From the Back Cover
Peter H. Michael won his first literary award as an undergraduate, and his graduate thesis was published as a national magazine's cover story.

His Remembering John Hanson: A Biography of the First President of the Original United States Government (2012) was awarded two national book prizes in biography and is considered to be the definitive biography of John Hanson. In 2014 his Palace of Yawns: How the United Nations Failed Poor Countries in the Population Explosion was awarded a national book prize in foreign affairs.

Michael has written two books on the Underground Railroad and publishes Underground Railroad Free Press, North America's leading Underground Railroad news publication. He authors magazine and newspaper articles, series and op-ed pieces, and wrote as Restaurant Critic for The Sacramento Bee, central California's largest newspaper.

Michael is a graduate of the University of Maryland, Berkeley and Princeton, and has taught at the graduate level at universities in Costa Rica, Japan, Thailand and the United States. He and his wife Vicki, a painter, live in Maryland on a historic farm that his family founded in 1768 and used to shelter freedom seekers in the Underground Railroad. The farm is powered entirely by sun and wind.

Must read

Hard to put this "road" book down. Great explanations of the economic disparity with easy to understand reasons. Wonderful descriptions of all the places in our great county that the author and his wife visited and the people they met along the way. Books brings to light the very serious and shameful problems facing our country's working middle class & poor. One feels like they are riding along with them on their journey. A must read.

A road book and much more.
By James O. Michael
The author, an American who had spent much of his life overseas, decided it was time to become reacquainted with the USA.
He and his wife bought a used RV and set out on a 12000mile journey across the country, striking up conversations at every stop.

One recurring topic of these conversations was income inequality. Not only is the gap between rich and poor becoming larger, but those who remain in the middle class are having a more difficult time hanging on.

Having seen the problems that income inequality has caused in Asian countries, he gives us an incisive look at what it is causing in our own.
