About the Author
During Story Tours to Britain, my days were filled with book-related adventures -- many of them planned. We met authors of children’s and adult books and explored places with literary and historical significance. Authors told us hows, and whys behind their books: How a woman could write convincingly in a male voice. Why picture books are not as simple to create as they look. How some authors seek a place to give them the kernel of a story. When we explored Belton House, the kernel for one author’s book, we were introduced to a ghost. (chapter 1) After visiting the Bronte home in Haworth, we walked the moors behind the parsonage and visited several private homes associated with the Bronte books and lives. (chapters 1, 6) When we entered the museum of James Herriott’s home/veterinarian office. we saw a tableau of pets and their owners. Someone immediately recognized which All Creatures Great and Small story they represented. (chapter 6) One dewy dawn, Story Tourists were the only ones at Stonehenge. We wandered inside the fence and touched the ancient stones. (chapter 5) Evidence shows that the Loch Ness Monster may have spotted me as I stood on the ramparts of Urquhart Castle. She became an information services officer in the US Air Force, then continued her writing career with organizations in government contracting and health care, including hospice. Scarecrow Press published her book, Winter in July: Visits with Children’s Authors Down Under, in 1996. Most recently Scottish Life magazine published her story about the week she and her granddaughter spent at Aigas Wildlife Conservation Centre in the Scottish Highlands.

With ancestry half Scottish and half English, this book was such a delight. Having never been to Britain (and I thank the author for her clever way of using "Britain" instead of messing with Great or the UK. You can tell immediately that I'm old.
Well! I loved this book, this book that showed me sites and places I have never enjoyed, nor shall I at this point.
If you have the least interest in Britain and its often illustrious, treasure writers of any genre, this book will warm you and, perhaps sell you on taking the same sort of pleasure that the author displays so well.
Between authors, their books, marvelous geography, and what attends all that, one could be very attempted to pack up and move there.
Mrs. Barley's keen interest in things British is very clear and told with enthusiasm and, yes, love.
Not wanted to be crass, yet I must say that the price is a gift. And after to buy and read your copy, buy one for your local library: I did.

A Personal Journey to England and Scotland

“A Story Tourist in Britain” is a charming, personal account of one book-lover’s series of tours in Great Britain, over the course of 14 years. Five different trips are recounted, each focusing on a different set of authors or genre of writing. Barley visits writers’ homes, burial spots, places of inspiration, and even filming locations of books that have been made into movies. All the while she shares the small discoveries, unexpected delights, and occasional headaches that every traveler knows well. The reader feels like a traveling companion, brought along on these lovely adventures. Reading this book has inspired me to pull up my old plans for an aborted second trip to England a few years back, and begin planning anew. I may even add some of Barley’s destinations to my itinerary.

This is a special and very unique travel book. This book combines much more than what to see when in...! Sit back and read about Britain from various perspectives: tourist, author, travel guide and historian. I am lucky to call this author my friend and have listened to several stories of her travels. Reading this book is like sitting with Jan and hearing those stories of her journeys. One is there with her! I would have loved photos though Jan's writing is so wonderful that I frequently feel as if I can see these places. Sit back and enjoy. Pace yourself and take your time.
